I have a pretty basic understanding of music theory and a reasonable ability to play the guitar. However, I've never really applied theory to guitar because, well, I just don't feel it's too necessary. Just shut up and play. I am a little curious though as to how certain things work

A G7 is: G B D F (1st, maj 3rd, 5th, 7th), as long as you have those four notes somewhere, in whatever octaves, it's a G7. The 7th doesn't have to do with steps up, it has to do with counting from the root note along the scale to know what note it is.
