I see someone has already informed you that the 'duck-like bird' is a Grebe so I shan't repeat myself. (They are seriously awesome birds though - youtube for their courtship dance, it's gorgeous.)

Also: sounds like you've had a massive adventure. (I am still sadface that we were both in London at the same time and didn't know it!) And have more ahead!

(If you do the UK again you should totally visit Cambridge so you've been to both halves of Oxbridge. Cambridge is gorgeous, all the colleges are piled up on top of each other.)
