Well, what period/country/status are you going for? If you want variations on basic tunic stuff that can be really f-in cool, check out: http://www.vertetsable.com/demos_rectangles.htm Actually the whole site rocks hard and she's awesome (as I'm sure you know:). The eastern european stuff is neat and is fantastic if you're all about not wasting fabric and love Tetris AND it's as easy as a t-tunic AND you can draft everything on graph paper first!!!!
I think that Mike being neat and tidy makes him suitable, pretty much as is. That's my big issue for guards/retainers. I'm not so much of the "you must have garb from x country and y time period in z colors" as I am "you must be neat and tidy and aesthetically inoffensive".
When in doubt, ask Roxanne or whomever is in charge of the retinue.
I liked what you wrote on the gratitude site, so I read on about you...and I found this entry very moving. Stay strong! I know my life would be so much more fun if I could stop caring what other people think, so I cheer you on in your effort.

w/"karate" shoes. the best part is that you can do all the hard stuff (drafting) well before you even get the fabric and scissors out.
