Folk for babies

I've been wondering about whether I could create a "Folk For Babies" collection, like the Classic FM for Babies one, that I could use when playing with my newborn daughter - and thought I'd put it out for suggestions for what I could include. And save me from going round the twist with the usual crap that's out there for kids ( Read more... )

"Roots" by Show of Hands - it's to the point and wonderfully describes the current state of things. Says everything I feel about how our culture is treated.

Or for pure lighthearted amusement, The Yetties' "Dorset Juggernaut" - never fails to make me laugh!

Those are a couple I just thought of off the top of my head. Hope that helps (but you don't have to take me up on them).

BTW, just seen your interests - I'll be at Ashton Gate on the 22nd, but as an away fan.

What type of clog are you learning? Clog or North West? I do North West.

'Dance to your daddy' for me -- particularly the Kerr/Fagan recording.

My favorite story song from childhood, and one of my daughter's favorites, is Pete Seeger's "Foolish Frog". In the U.S., it's easy to find on a great compilation of his called "Stories and Songs for Young Children." The funny thing is when you start using the longest ballads you know as lullabies (in my case "Willie of Winsbury") and soon have a young child singing about unwed mothers.

When my kids were young, a long while ago, I got some tapes of nursery rhymes from Mothercare, and was knocked out by how good they were. When I looked at the performing credits, I realised that it was virtually the classic Steeleye Span lineup. It then clicked that traditional sung nursery rhymes /are/ folk, it just needs the right performance to bring it out.

Sorry, can't remember the names of the tapes and I don't know whether they're still available.

No, that does exist - I seem to remember my sister and I had some bizarre video of animated nursery rhymes, with Martin Carthy among the performers.

Aha! A swift google reveals I remember correctly, though that's not really much help in this instance as it's now unavailable...
