Why do a lot of people tend to re-interpret what a person is trying to say?

Why do a lot of people tend to pull down others so that they can feel superior?

Why is a person so uninterested when talking about something totally unrelated to him or her?

I've wondered a lot about those things, too, and more often than not, I end up with something along the lines of "Because they're human, and therefore flawed and corruptible."

But I hope for better things in people, and sometimes, I'm not disappointed. Sometimes. :)
