Plan: read the BBC's Big Read Top 100 by the end of the year.  I need some motivation for reading books which aren't either for uni or Sophie Kinsella.

1. The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien
2. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
3. His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman
4. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams

Yes! It's really really good. I liked the film, but I went to see it with my mum, which really wasn't the best idea because she was completely shocked by the whole orgy thing and now seems to think I read horrific books. But anyway, I liked it.
I read War and Peace last summer, it's wonderful once you get into it, it was one of my lifes ambitions haha, but yes, read it! :)

Good luck with Dickens - Great Expectations was so hard to get through. Animal Farm and Of Mice and Men are short, good reads though! That is a very good idea and I might do the same, although I know what you mean about finding time/motivation to read books that aren't for school.

I think I've read Of Mice and Men, but I was in third year at school, so I'd have been 13 so I don't remember it that well. I really want to read Animal Farm because I liked 1984 a lot. I really do need motivation for reading, I hardly do it anymore which is sad, and quite crap for an English Lit student :(

You haven't read The Secret Garden or the BFG? You haven't LIVED Kirsty! They're awesome. But do NOT read Ulysses. In fact run as quickly as you can away from it. Noughts and Crosses is also amazing (as are its sequels)and Memoirs of a Geisha is also really good. But don't read James Joyce - I don't care how brilliant they say he was - the guy was a TIT!

Oh wow, I have read The BFG! I forgot to put it down, and I've read half of The Secret Garden proper, but have read the children's picture book version haha. I'm struggling through Ulysses for English Lit at the moment, it's not going well, I feel we will not get on :(

Hehe, it's just a silly ambition thing, just to motivate me to read something decent for once. I really liked Of Mice and Men too! I read it in high school as well :)
