The people I know and care about are all over the place rather than all conveniently in my neighborhood where I might run into them at random. Reading what they write lets me maintain some sense of their presence in my life, even if I see them in person very rarely. I could do this by phone, but I hate phone calls, or by letter, which I've done in the past, which has rather a different set of limitations. Is there a medium you prefer for keeping in touch when meeting in person is insufficient? Or is the lack of one your point?
You can pay livejournal if you like. :) While I'm sure I'm still part of the product here, it feels like that's more for my attention than for my personal data. I may be quite wrong.
For all that, I'll give you that what I post is quite self-centered, with much less of philosophy or current events than many folks post.
