the puzzle that is Japan

I saw Gackt on a night time talk show this week. He talked about a near-death drowning experience (at first I thought it was the one that supposedly happened when he was a kid, but as the following details suggest, it must have been later on). And explained in his very so serious and awkward way that he was just about to give up, until he thought to himself "When was the last time I had sex?" At which point he realized it had been months (because he was with the band recording in the boonies where there are no shag-worthy women...?), and found the will to live and swam to the surface. Classy, Gackt, reeaaaal classy. He also showed pictures of rooms in his house. He has a waterfall thing from floor to ceiling in his bedroom because it would have taken a ridiculous amount of air conditioners to cool it (maybe he said 30? I do not recall). There was a good section about this ramen he likes to eat in Kyoto once a year for his birthday, though. He apparently was also on an Arashi show recently, which sounds promising in the field of light entertainment, but I have yet to watch it.

On to the puzzling thing, I saw a show on TV today (in the middle of the day) that featured this idol/model chick who is known for having big boobs. I knew that she was known for her boobs ahead of time because she's in a nerve-grating commercial that every time I see, I want to punch something cute. I commented how much I hated her in that commercial to the Boy, and his response was "she's got really big boobs you know!" At which point I looked at him funny and said something about how that doesn't make me like her any more. (Also, in the commercial and on the show she wears things that obscure the size of her chest, so it's kind of hard to tell unless you see her modeling underwear and such.) So during the show, they spend what felt like hours, but was probably more like 15 minutes just talking about her boobs. And it didn't really seem like she's a newbie model, so it's not like it's a news flash that she's well endowed, yet they still just kept talking about it. She talked about how many centimeters her bust line was, what different cup sizes she has been, explained what she does to keep them from sagging, and said that she and a large-breasted friend of hers go to the gym together and in the locker room check each other's boobs (visually) to see how they are holding up.

Although there are mixed genders on set, the main interviewer was a man who giggled as he asked her questions or made jokes exaggerating sagging boobs etc. But he also gestured to a female co-host after every size related comment the idol said in order to try to get the cohost to say her measurements or otherwise talk about her boobs in comparison to idol chick's. As I was watching this I found myself feeling pretty offended. The way they were talking just seemed wrong, demeaning in some way. I tried to take a step back and think that perhaps it really is just Japan being more comfortable with bodies and nudity than American culture is, but somehow I couldn't stop feeling uncomfortable about what I was seeing. And maybe it really is just Japan being okay with nudity/ the body, but there was just something skeevy about the way the interviewer asked her questions and the candor of the whole conversation. I dunno, maybe I'm just a body conscious American who's not looking at it the right way.

Annnnnnnd, on to something completely different. A PV by Kazuki Kato! Just because I find his silver wig and body language hot. xD This song is an opening theme for Reborn, but I just happened to see this video on TV and thought I'd share.
