Dr. Horrible - So They Say
“You have to go now?” Mal questioned as Inara packed her bags.

“Yes. Mal the companion academy need me. This position is perfect for me, so they say anyway…”

“Is that what the whore academy says or do the clients too?” Inara glared at Mal, she hated it when he said things about her work.

“Captain Reynolds, a petty crook like you has NO right to insult my profession. What I do is honest.”

“Yeah, real honest, men paradin’ around like they’ve earned you, like you’re some prize to be won. And what’s worse is that they got you by opening their wallets.” Mal muttered.

“Mal is there something you want or have you just come for one last argument?”

“I…” Mal paused, causing Inara to look up from her packing. “Don’t go” he thought, to proud to say it. “Uh… Good luck, I guess…” Inara nodded, secretly wishing Mal would just ask her to stay, she would have. She grabbed her bags and walked off the ship, leaving Mal alone in her shuttle.

“Goodbye Captain Reynolds.” Their feelings remained hidden.
There’s no happy ending, so they say.

Jimmy Eat World - Drugs or Me
Machines beeped in the infirmary, confirming that Serenity’s only current patient was still living. Captain Malcolm Reynolds lay on the cold, metal bed. Inara was at his side. Mal stirred from his unconscious state and could feel the bullet wound in his stomach. Inara smiled at Mal momentarily then proceeded to rush around him.

“Mal! Thank God you’re awake. I’ll go tell Simon.” Mal spluttered, struggling to talk.

“No… Inara stay with me, you’re…you’re the one I need right now…”

“Mal, it’s my fault you’re here. But you shouldn’t have confronted my client.”

“He disrespected you. He was gonna shoot you.” Inara looked away, realization hitting her.

“I…He…He was just threatening, he probably wouldn’t… Anyway that man now has a black mark in the client registry; no companion will see him… Thankyou by the way…” She was distracted by Mal coughing; he spat blood into the sink beside him. “I’ll get Simon. Mal you’ll pull through this.”

“No. Inara, you can’t save me this time…I can feel…I’m…” Mal passed out. The wound in his stomach was deep; he had lost a lot of blood.

“Mal? Mal hold on.” Inara took Mal’s hand, crying. She kissed him, “Please Mal wake up.” The machines appeared to have stopped. Minutes passed. The machines still weren’t beeping. Mal twitched and opened his eyes, looking at Inara who was still crying.

“I hope those tears aren’t on account of me, as captain I won’t stand for it.”

“Mal?! But I thought you were…”

“Yeah, we really need to get these machines fixed… Also, where’s the doc when I need him?”

Steps - Paradise Lost (Yeah, I know I’m cool)
Inara stood on the balcony of her client’s mansion, looking out onto the desert paradise, watching a caravan go by. She had told her client that she was going out to get some air and think about his offer to stay as his personal companion. A cold wind blew in from the east, causing Inara to shiver. She tried to control her thoughts but all she could think of was her captain, Mal, out on some sort of illegal smuggling job no doubt. She considered the offer, staying here would at least mean that she would never get pulled into tricky situations with the Alliance. Although, deep down, she knew that she could never accept. This place would never be paradise without Serenity, without Mal.

Soil - Redefine
Explosions and gunshots were running through Mal’s mind. Dead bodies, allies and enemies all around. Mal twitched, in a restless sleep due to his nightmare. Inara was on deck above Mal’s cabin; she heard a crash as Mal’s gun fell off the table beside his bed and went into his room. Mal was shaking and thrashing the air around his bed. Inara leaned down towards him and touched his arm.

“Mal?” Mal jumped awake with a start, he was shaking. Inara took Mal in her arms, holding him close.

“I’ve seen so much death…Caused so much death…” Mal’s shaking was slowly coming to a stop. “Inara please…Don’t tell the rest of the crew… I’m the captain; they need me to be strong…” Inara sighed.

“I won’t Mal…You know I’m always here for you… And you’re always strong for the crew; you’re allowed to be like this sometimes.” Mal had stopped shaking, composed once again.

“Inara. Every time I lose control you help me… You…you save me… I just wanna thank you for that…” Inara smiled. In a strange way these moments with Mal, when he let his guard down, were special, precious to her.

Aly & AJ - Chemicals React
Inara was bathing in her shuttle. She had just had a huge argument with Mal and was trying to calm down.

“Erm… Inara I… Oh, uh, whoa… Sorry…” Mal barged into Inara’s shuttle, as usual. He wasn’t expecting to see Inara like this. Inara covered herself with a throw and came over to Mal.

“I told you not to barge into my shuttle uninvited.”

“You said you were leaving. And it’s my shuttle, you rent it.” Inara snapped.

“What do you want Mal?”

“I…um…I want to apologize…I…Please don’t leave…” This took Inara completely off guard.

“Why?” Even as Inara asked this, she knew, whatever the answer, she couldn’t leave Mal or Serenity. Mal was completely out of his element.

“Because…I…Inara… When I first met you, when you looked in my eyes… It was like the planets were aligning in front of me…” Mal knew this sounded crap and cliché, Inara didn’t care. This was close enough to what she was waiting to hear, Mal’s true feelings. She had loved him since the moment she set foot on Serenity. Inara leaned in. This was it. They were finally going to kiss.

//”Mal. We need you on the bridge. We’re receiving a wave.”//
Wash’s voice over the radio obliterated the moment. They had missed their chance.
