Could be a Trojan.

Try these softwares :

Tune-Up Utilities 2007 (30-day free fully functional trial) - graet for registry repairs/cache clean-ups etc

AVG Free Virus and Spy removers.

Spybot Free

Xsoft (pay for this but it does detect and remove Trojans)

Alternatively, bin the creature and get a Mac!

I used all except for the last and no joy.

Format/reinstall seems to have worked. Now I'm having fun putting everything back on.

This thing is definitely dying. It's over 7 years old and every 6 months or so for the past 2 years will have a melt down. I just need it to get me through to July/Aug so I can get my tax cheque and go get a new one.

Seems to be fine for the moment, but thanks - will keep this post in memories so I can refer back to it.
