I'm just in from the Fear Factory, Soilwork, Strapping Young Lad and Darkane concert.
What an exhausting night. I got in the city at 4:30pm for a show that didn't even open the doors till 8, so i met up with some people i had planned to to meet and because the Heartland Brewery has a location right there at Union Square not two blocks from Irving Plaza, we stopped in for some drinks (yay for red rooster ale w/amaretto). Anyway after that it was like 6pm, we had to wait to get it for 2 hours, ugh. I guess it had a perk, we got right up front.
Up first was Darkane. Now, i've listened to their new album Layer of Lies and i can't say i was all that impressed, so i wasn't expecting much. I have to say, they were better than i figured they would be. After that, SYL was up. Devin Townsend is one funny mofaka. One example, he was saying how he wanted to see if new york had any balls - he wanted to see a big fucking mosh pit, and he pointed to one guy who i guess wasn't into it and he was like "guess you have tiny little poopie balls". I am not a big SYL fan, but they were pretty solid too.
Next up was Soilwork. Now they were the selling point for me. Their new album may be a bit of a disappointment, but they still rock hard live. Considering they were the last band before the headliner, i expected they would get an hour. Instead they did like SIX songs. I was pretty pissed at that. Sure the set was super rocking and i loved every minute of it, but wtf? I got robbed. They played: Stabbing The Drama, Figure Number Five, Nerve, As We Speak, a song that i do not remember, and then they finished up with Follow The Hollow. They hit most of my fav's, so i guess i can't complain TOO loudly.
Last up was Fear Factory. I saw them live before at Gigantour (actually for that matter, i saw Soilwork before too.. in May with Dark Tranquillity, Hypocrisy and Mnemic). They aren't really my thing, but i don't dislike them. What i do dislike is when the kiddies go completely overboard with insanity. After 2 songs of the FF set i had to the fuck out of the second row and to a less frenetic distance. I think when i get crushed in that tightly along with getting knocked every which way, i get a bit of claustrophobia or something. It spawns a mild anxiety attack. Most of the time it isn't a problem, unless the kids are going that extra mile and beyond, which they apparently saved for the FF set.
At any rate, i enjoyed the rest of their set just fine and then i met back up with those i went with for the long trek back home. Around 3:30am i got here and now that i have written a little something about this evening, i am going to collapse into bed.
