it was super yummy! buying the squash all peeled and cubed was worth the price, because of my tendonitis in my right elbow i never could have done all the knife work necessary, even peeling and coring 5 small apples was as much as i could do.
The alternative to peeling and cubing is to cut the squash in half and bake face side down in a bath of water. About a 1/4 - 1/2 inch. I don't think you really need that much water. You peel it after it's done. It might be a bit on the mushy side as opposed to the pretty cubes, though...
I imagine you could do the same with the apple, after you core it. I seem to remember my mom baking cored apples (without the bath). I think she put the spices inside the core. With butter probably. (http://simplyrecipes.com/recipes/baked_apples/) I like the apples better tart. :)
Cutting a quash is hard work. Cubing it would be so much worse!
thanks! that's an excellent reminder - the cubes are nice and all, but it tastes good either way. and the apple thing makes me want to make some baked apples this week - my fav :)
