He’s a man forced into being a monster, living off instinct and urges he can’t control. He feels like nothing. We’ve heard those words before. We know another vampire who felt like nothing, neither man nor monster.

Ooh, nice paralleling. I just adore the recurring Angel/son relationships.

Thanks for reading:) I too love all the father/son/Angel/Connor/Spike parallels - it's part of what makes season five so clever.

I've been reading these along with rewatching season 5. I love your insights. You almost rescue this episode for me. But my Spike-o-philic self still balks at the hatchet job that was done to his IQ for this episode. Any thoughts on how to navigate that? The only one I could think of is that they're hiding what you see in plain sight -- Spike's the one with clarity, etc. But Angel is the leader and the smart one. Spike is just a buffoon. That's meant as a smoke screen. But I'd love your thoughts on it.

Past-Spike is a buffoon in this episode - you are right (actually, in season 5 present-Spike can be a buffoon too - one of the major hurdles to come to terms with this season, particularly early on, isnt it?) I was always pretty 'meh' about this episode until I started my close viewing and started looking beyond the surface story. And I admit, I love this ep mostly for the ending. I'm shallow - show my boy as superior to Angel, even for a minute and I'll buy anything ;) I can accept Spike-the-slightly-dense and Spike-the-stupidly-arrogant in the past because that's clearly not what he is in the present and I think this is what the writers are trying to show us ( ... )
