♛ in depth
Personality: Byakuya is often seen as an extremely calm and apathetic man, very rarely often to the point of seeming heartless and cruel in regards to most situations. This is only because of Byakuya’s upbringing as the heir of the Kuchiki Family however, and because of said upbringing Byakuya often keeps his emotions locked away. It does not mean he is incapable of having them, but rather somewhat socially retarded when it comes to expressing them. Adding to this appearance of a cold young lord is the consistent use of formal titles and speech, his dedication to his work and his tendency to sound distant and elegant even when he is insulting or advising someone. Additionally, his reaction to shock is minimal, Byakuya almost immediately able to come up with a logical explanation to the offending presence or event and going back to his normal apathetic state. The most one would get is a slight widening of the eyes... Unless they happen to be getting on his nerves, anyway.
Byakuya’s image and title also seem to hold high merit to him. However, Byakuya knows what is truly important and that allows him to put the lives of those he cares about before anything else. He is still a strong believer and upholder of the laws any place may have, wherever he may be.
Despite his cold outward appearance, Byakuya has a much warmer heart than one might expect. He often appears to mentor others in his life when it seems that they need it as well as to provide aid when necessary. Although he might not always show it, he truly is devoted to the people he finds important in his life and has ways of working so that he can maintain the image of a cold and distant noble while at the same time protecting the people he values above all others. Most times the two aspects are kept in perfect balance, but in the times when it is tested he will choose the people he cares about above his title and duties. This aspect in particular is a shining point of Byakuya’s personality.
When he is not working he often spends time alone, finding quiet spots with beautiful surroundings that are more frequently than not outdoors. Because of this it is safe to assume that, along with being anti-social, he has a great respect and admiration for nature. Cherry Blossom trees in particular he enjoys, and considering his zanpakuto that should come as no surprise. These times are when Byakuya is truly serene and calm, unlike the false serenity he often projects to the world when he is feeling conflicted or troubled. Even so, the difference between the face of the falsely calm Byakuya and the truly peaceful is noticeable... To those who know him, at least.
Canon Background: [NOT COMPLETE. Still have to add the most recent chapters.]
Byakuya was born into the royalty of the Soul Society, destined to become the 28th Lord of the Kuchiki Manor from the beginning. He was determined to be worthy of this title as well, even being tutored by ‘The Goddess of Flash’ Yoruichi in the art of Shunpo. This developed into a somewhat strained but mostly positive relation between the two, often involving Yoruichi teasing Byakuya about how slow he was and how he would never be able to catch her in their games of tag. Considering how Byakuya was in the past (it may bring a certain red-headed teenager to mind), this of course incited him to try harder and continue to spur to greatness, not only with Shunpo but in all aspects of his life. For quite some time, it seemed like it would be a fairly simple path, for Byakuya to continue growing stronger and succeed his father both as the heir to the Kuchiki Manor and as the 6th Division Captain in the Gotei 13. It was then, however, that things began to blur into the shades of gray in his life as opposed to the black and white he had always had before.
It was then that he met Hisana.
Hisana, a commoner from Rukongai, was the woman Byakuya had fallen in love with. By marrying her he broke tradition in the Kuchiki Family, by accepting a commoner into the noble Kuchiki family. At the time, Byakuya did not care that he had disrupted the rules of his family, but later he would come to feel guilt over the event. Even so, during his marriage to Hisana he couldn’t have been happier. It was five years later that it came to an end however, for Hisana became fatally ill. Shortly before passing away, Hisana had given Byakuya a dying wish; to find her younger biological sister, Rukia, into the Kuchiki Family. There was also a promise made along with the wish; that he would lie to Rukia about why she was being adopted, for Hisana believed that, by abandoning Rukia when they were younger, she was not worthy of calling Rukia her sister.
One year after Hisana’s passing, her wish came to pass. Byakuya found Rukia at the Shinigami Academy and immediately adopted her into the Kuchiki family, once again breaking the rules of his clan but at the same time fulfilling the wish of his deceased wife. It was later that he swore on the graves of his parents that he would never again break any law, whether it was the laws of the clan or those of anything else in his life. He also remained somewhat cold to Rukia throughout this time, even if he began to harbour deep and true feelings as her older sibling for her.
It was fifty-five years later that this devotion - as well as his assorted vows - was put to the test. He was sent to the human world to retrieve his own sister, Rukia Kuchiki, and bring her back to the Soul Society to face execution for her apparent crimes. It was through this chain of events that Byakuya would meet who without a doubt is probably the single-most influential person in his life (whether he wants it to be or not), Ichigo Kurosaki. Throughout the period where Rukia was imprisoned and awaiting her sentence, Byakuya had not only encountered a very weak Ichigo but was made to fight against his own vice captain as well. All for the sake of upholding the laws of the soul society, for no matter how he felt about Rukia he was determined to keep the vow he made on his parents’ graves.
That was, until he encountered Ichigo again three days later, on the day of Rukia’s execution.
While Renji escaped with Rukia, Byakuya began to fight Ichigo, noticing the extraordinary increase of his strength as well as his sudden ability to use Bankai. And, finding that Ichigo was a much more formidable foe that Byakuya grew increasingly infuriated with, Byakuya used a technique he had only used once before in his life; The Senkei form of Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. The battle went on fiercely for a while, but as Byakuya was about to deal a killing blow to Ichigo, something completely unexplainable happened. A hollow mask appeared on the face of the teenager before him, just as Ichigo had caught his sword. Byakuya was nearly killed while Ichigo was in this state before Ichigo returned to normal, agreeing to Ichigo’s terms of ignoring what had just transpired. With both fighters weak, they agreed honourably to end their skirmish with one last blow. Before they do this however, Ichigo asked just why Byakuya wasn’t trying to save Rukia. Byakuya, in return, answered that the answer would only be disclosed upon his defeat.
Shuukei versus Getsuga Tenshou, the final strike was made by both of them. And, in a surprising turn, both are wounded severely by the other’s blade. Byakuya then revealed to Ichigo just why he wouldn’t save Rukia, confided in him that he would allow it because it would be following the rules and those override personal feelings. However, Ichigo’s feelings on the matter, his honesty about fighting the rules if he were in the same position for the sake of those he cared for struck a chord in the Kuchiki noble. It was then that Byakuya understood just what motivated Ichigo and what made him so powerful... They were never truly fighting each other, but acting as scapegoats for conflicting ideals. Byakuya, then and there, decided to put an end to it.
When Rukia is nearly killed by Gin Ichimaru, Byakuya re-appeared to take the blow, collapsing from exhaustion and his severe injuries soon afterward. While being treated by captain Unohana, Byakuya revealed to Rukia everything about the past, about his true feelings and why she was adopted into the Kuchiki clan as well as giving her a well-deserved apology. And, during this exchange, he also thanked Ichigo for helping him make a strong and true decision that had been turbulent in his mind ever since that whole affair began.
It isn’t until later that Byakuya is seen again, arriving in the human world to retrieve Hitsugaya’s team that had been sent to Karakura town. However, in secret he allowed Rukia and Renji to return after they’re brought back to the soul society, saying that it was only his duty to bring them back there and what happened afterward was none of his concern. He also passed on a message to Ichigo in this manner; “That filthy brat will never survive in Hueco Mundo if he is left to his own devices.”
Later in Hueco Mundo, Byakuya appears to save a dying Rukia from the 7th Espada, Zommari Leroux. During this battle Byakuya cut down a number of clones Zommari created, eventually forced to use Utsusemi and leave behind his haori in order to avoid a strike Zommari had made and had appeared behind Zommari to continue their fight. It is then that Byakuya’s leg was taken control of by Zommari’s power, but the control is soon severed because Byakuya immediately severed the tendons in his leg using his sword. However, there was another target Zommari set his sights on, but Byakuya blocked that blow towards Rukia with his left hand.
Hanatarou appeared on the battle field soon after, receiving a warning from Byakuya to stay back due to the dangers. When he realized that Zommari has taken control of his left hand however, the tendons there were sliced as well in order to sever the control. But, Zommari then did something that ignited a furious fire within Byakuya (although not a spark of said fire showed to his face); he took control of Rukia’s head and therefore had control over her whole body. Byakuya was quick to use Bakudou #61: Rikudo Kourou, freezing Rukia’s body in place without harming her. Byakuya also swiftly released his Bankai soon after, using Goukei to crush Zommari. Unfortunately enough, Zommari survived that. It is then that Byakuya finally concluded that the techniques Zommari was using were much similar to Kido, and moments later he found the way to counter Zommari and, within minutes, ended his life.
Byakuya, having noticed that Isane Kotetsu is hiding nearby, instructed her to reveal herself to treat the injured Rukia and Hanatarou. Rukia woke up to see that Byakuya was without his haori as well as slightly injured from the battle, but Byakuya gave her only a small reassurance; Rest now, for there was another much bigger fight to come.
AU Background: Born in one of the most prestigious upper-class families in Goldoa City, Byakuya always lived as what can be described as a modern noble. With luxury and riches came strict rituals and regiments, the boy always improving both his brain and his body. These traditions included Calligraphy, Poetry, Sword-Play with Katana, and many other activities. Through his adolescence he mastered it all. But it was not without some difficulty.
While younger he was a brutally defiant teenager, often following his heart without thinking situations through in their entirety and, as a result, getting into a lot of trouble. It was through one of these incidents that his power was discovered, as a matter of fact.
At age twelve he was admitted into Estrasia Academy, always at the top of his class and gaining unprecedented discipline in his studies. However, scarcely a year before he graduated, he found love in a woman named Hisana. Hisana was a woman from Kall, not at all raised in higher class and not at all someone his family accepted. However, Byakuya fell in love with Hisana and defied his family in the most unexpected way imaginable; once he turned eighteen, he married her.
That marriage, however, also wasn’t to last. Hisana was very sick, passing away to her illness a mere five years after their union. On her deathbed, Byakuya heard the final wish of Hisana; to find her younger sister, Rukia, and always take care of her. It took twelve months, but upon finding Rukia on the streets of Kall he immediately adopted the girl into the Kuchiki family. Ever since then Byakuya vowed to never break another rule or family tradition, causing his relationship to Rukia to be very strained. However, when the time calls for it, it will be apparent that Byakuya did come to care for Rukia as if she were his own younger sister.
Through this time Byakuya continued training and excelling with his power, even finding that he had minor telekinetic abilities on top of his hyper acceleration. He gained complete control over his powers and, once going through the necessary extra training, gained the degrees necessary to teach at Estrasia Academy. He now teaches Basic Telekinesis to those just discovering what can be determined as Telekinetic Prowess and Literature to the older students at the Academy.

Killing: Ask me and give me a reason. I'd rather avoid it but I'm not completely against it.
Hugging, Kissing, etc.: As his mun, I would not mind if he did. All I can say is... Good luck.
Deaging, Genderswapping, etc.: By all means go ahead.
Mindreading: Again, by all means go ahead. He thinks about the past a lot but when he's more relaxed he's more likely to think about nature (read, plants), calligraphy and occasionally his training stances.
