Building a family again [Outsiders Refresh!]

Katara was happy to have Zhin accompany her as she went about her busy work: she'd had an idea that this would take a long time to complete, so she'd spent the last few days she would normally set aside for training or meditation to bustling around the Marriot hotel, getting things to be as they'd been when she first approached the original leaders ( Read more... )

Hey there weren't any rules about her not being there, right? Lash walked in, her own caterpillar-dog (creatively named...Dog) hanging in her hair and down her back, splitting the afro in half. She was thankful he was much lighter than he seemed, or else she would have left him behind.

Man, this hotel was much better than her sorry-excuse for a base she had set up. Not that Lash cared! Really...CO officers were used to basic tents and sleeping in terrible conditions yeah she was totally jealous.

Part of her was curious about being with her own peer group. All her life, Lash had interacted with people twice her age and even in Rouge Squadron, she was still one of the younger people there. Hopefully they wouldn't all be that stupid, unlike her wonderful wunderkind genius self.

Immediately after she walked in, she almost regretted it, unsure of how to greet anyone. So she did the sensible thing and stared.

Katara, for her part, was more than happy to greet people she didn't know exclusively. She could see that this girl, whoever she was, was still adjusting to all of the people here, and she wanted to make sure that she got a good impression of who they all were. Katara strode over to her, silently really liking how her hair seemed to have a life of its own.

That was just cool.

"Hi," she said, giving the girl a smile. "I'm Katara, of the Southern Water Tribe. Who might you be?"

"Uhhh...." she hesitated, unsure what to make of the other's girl title. And her hair. The hair was interesting. Water Tribe? Seriously? "Lash, of the Black Hole...Organization. Yeah." She idly scratched the puppy's head, unsure of what to say next.

Man, things were much easier when she just bossed people around.

Zhin responded to Lash's petting by nuzzling her hand a little.

Katara figured that she might have been a little put off by the way she presented her title, but it was really the only thing that distinguished her from other people. It was her tribe, after all and she missed them.

"Black Hole Organization? So you've been on a team before then?"

Hey Lash hey. Your dog liked being petted too. Dog gave off a whine at the other puppy getting attention, so she gave it a pat on the head as well. Katara had touched one of Lash's favorite subjects; talking about how awesome Black Hole was.

"I wasn't just part of a team, I was one of the four Commanding Officers!" she replied, beaming proudly and puffing her chest a little. "I had entire armies under my command, tee hee hee!" She waved her arms. "I also built most of the weapons Black Hole used, like the Neotanks! I actually found one on Stacy too, I use it to drive around."

Zhin respectively allowed the other dog to be petted: she understood that attention needed to be had, and that girl WAS her owner. She went back to lying on her front paws, but Katara got the message and started to pet her own dog.

"You used to command an ARMY?" Color her impressed, although unfortunately a girl commanding an army brought up one particularly dangerous firebender to mind. Then again, she was also impressed that Lash actually KNEW how to drive a tank: Azula would have just had someone else do it, not to mention Lash actually MADE her own weapons? It made her think of that man back in the Air Temple.

"That's really something! Was there a war in your world too? We had to deal with one in mine too, and we did actually meet someone that made weapons. It looked pretty difficult."

"Well uh..." Lash rubbed her dog again for a moment.

"We...started the wars. The Allied Nations? An organization to stop us. Then Hawke and I turned against them when they tried to kill us and Von Bolt too charge." She smiled, although it was hard to tell what she was really feeling right now. "So I guess you could say I've been in wars all my life."

Katara did go a little silent at the mention of actually starting wars. There were a lot of things she could forgive, and there were definitely times where people who had done wrong had changed. Zuko came to mind. The idea of actually starting wars, however, made her think of Azula again, and all of the things she'd done. For a moment, Katara closed her eyes forcing herself to let this go.

At least, to let go of automatically thinking someone who'd done wrong would always be that way. She had always believed in the capacity to change, and she'd seen it happen. Besides, why come here to join the Outsiders if you were just going to start trouble?

"You're pretty young," Katara said, "but so am I, when it gets down to it. We do need some techies in our team though, and I know that's your thing, so we'll definitely be happy to have you."

She paused. "And maybe one day you can tell me about that stuff on your world with the wars. I'm still trying to understand people's back stories, you know?"
