Lash had no idea who this boy was. Really, it was a simple unrelated event which had caused her to come to medbay (she liked looking at some of the more impressive pieces of hardware to study them). The last few days had gotten her to think of a lot of things in her life - what she needed to do, and if Hawke had been in that pod that had been destroyed...
The boy wasn't too hard to miss in any case, and she curiously peered over at Alex without saying a word.
She raised one hand, in a half-heartfelt wave. The rat was kinda cute... She didn't recall anything happening in the ship that would get people hurt. Maybe he just fell over?
Alice snuggled into Alex's chest so go back to napping contently as Alex explained, "I-it's sorta complicated..." First he would have to explain his powers, and then what had happened with Matt, some of which he was still unsure of himself. He nervously rubbed at his bandaged arm, finding that it wasn't exactly comforting without feeling the cloth of his jacket or at the very least his own skin.
He smiled a little more, "What a-about you? Are you visiting?"
"Me? Yeah!" She patted a nearby machine for emphasis. "I'm a genius when it comes to machines, so I like to pop in here and see if I can get inspired from all of the technology around me. It's not like Stacy doesn't have impressive stuff everywhere else, but these usually have the biggest needles, teeheehee!"
Yeah, that probably came off a little creepier than she had wanted it to be.
It most certainly did come off as being rather creepy, but Alex responded with his usual reaction when he didn't know how to handle a situation. He smiled and laughed awkwardly, "I suppose they do, b-but I hate needles. They make me f-feel like a pin c-cushion. What s-sorta machines do ya make?" Alex, being a programmer, rather preferred the data aspects, but you really can't have those without having a machine to run it off of.
She grinned back. Talking about machines was always a favorite topic of hers, she didn't mind going into the darker aspects of her nature.
"Depends! I've built so many since I was a kid I've lost count, but I'm pretty versatile! Of course being a Black Hole Commanding Officer, a lot of my late childhood and teenager years were spent making weapons for wars. Neotanks, Stealth Fighters, Black Bombs, Black Submarines we have a theme going on, teehee. Oh oh! and my favorite of all time! One day, Sturm asked me to build him a 500 foot tall death ray. It was the best! Of course, with my genius it was doable. Just too bad the Allied Nations destroyed it."
Alex continued smiling awkwardly. He hated weapons. Anything that caused death or pain was no good in his book. All they ever did was make more shadows. And yet here was this seemingly sweet girl, chatting excitedly about them. As if it was perfectly normal. How was he supposed to react?
With a sort of strained awkward smile he pushed himself to say, "I-I don' like weapons..."
He shook his head, "All I've seen 'em do is c-cause more pain for more p-people. I c-can see negative emotions, an' every time there's a weapon involved, th-the shadows s-spread like fire." A single bullet could make an entire town carry a shadow over it. One dead child, and almost everyone on the street had a shadow, be it of fear, of regret, of loss, of sadness. Just one bullet. He hated to imagine how it would have been like to see the people of Japan after Hiroshima.
"The Shadows?" A few months before, she would have just asked him if he needed sunlight or anything, but now, she knew that every person or creature on this ship was different. "They are connected to negative emotions?"
Alex shook his head, "They are negative emotions. I see negative emotions l-like a shadow surrounding a person. E-eating one that w-was too strong for me is wh-what got me here." For all the times he got to explain that, he still wasn't getting tired of it. Back home he hadn't been allowed to tell anyone about his powers who wasn't a shadow eater themselves. It wasn't like there were spies listening in everywhere, but there were still enough around that it made talking about it not worth the risk. At least here he had the chance to be open.
Oh wow, that just opened up a million more questions.
"So wait shadows all around us are negative emotions? What does my shadow look like..." she paused and looked at him oddly. "Did you say you...eat them?"
Alex laughed nervously, "N-not the shadows you see. They're shadows I c-can see around people, but they're not r-really like normal shadows. I-It's, Oh!" He remembered that he had figured out how to share his vision with Billy, but at least this time he could warn the girl, "they look like this." He could feel a link sent out from him to Lash, so she would be able to see the world as he could. There were probably several people around with shadows- dark amorphous forms that looked a bit like swarms of gnats if you have very blurry vision. There sat on his shoulders a rather dark, large, ominous looking shadow, even though he was smiling at Lash.
He severed the connection, which would cause the forms to fade from view, "Y-you don' have any shadows r-right now, so you must not be really upset 'bout anything. An' y-yeah, I eat them."
Oh god I am idiot, sorry,things_go_boomOctober 9 2010, 04:16:28 UTC
HOOOOOLY DEATH RAYS that was rather surreal. Lash couldn't help but let out a small gasp when she say the other man's shadow.
"Yeah, I guess I'm not upset," she finally managed to say. "Life on the ship is pretty fun! ..apart from the whole alien invading thing but that's what were here for right?"
ah, it's fiiine. We all do it.hack_ratOctober 9 2010, 07:23:40 UTC
"S-sorry if I s-scared ya." Alex shrugged and sighed, "I g-guess it isn't too bad here." His lips twitched into a smile as he thought of Luna. "An' there's d-definitely p-plenty o-of good here t-too." There was no mistaking that look on his face for anything but love.
The boy wasn't too hard to miss in any case, and she curiously peered over at Alex without saying a word.

His little black pet rat, Alice, peaked her head out from under the covers to see who had gotten her master's attention.

"You don't...like weapons." In her mind, that was near impossible. Then again, she had not met Woody yet.
