Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. New crew-mates might see a tall ( Read more... )

The girl with the pink hair was, naturally, kinda hard to miss. So hey, of course Marco had to go and smirk at her, right?

"It helps if you press the 'on' button," Marco said 'helpfully'. "And I hope you've got some hair dye hidden somewhere in those pockets of yours Barbie, or you're not gonna stay pink for long."

"I figured that much out, thank you." Further figuring out which button was the one that made it go on -- and with her luck right now, it'd be the button that says on -- was step two.

Step two was on hold in favor of wondering who this person was, and why she was being mistaken for this woman named Barbie. A woman who, apparently, dyed her hair. "I'm sorry, but I'm not Barbie. My name's Sakura, and as far as the 'pink' goes," she said, lifting one hand to pull at some of her longer bangs. "It'll be longer than you think. Planning on sticking around until I'm sixty to laugh when it finally starts going white?"

"You want that one over there," Marco grinned, and pointed to a button that Sakura clearly hadn't touched yet. (The fact that her Omnicomm was still off was a big giveaway here.)

"Marco", he said, holding out a hand. "And seriously? That's natural? Man, punks everywhere would kill to have your hair."

Sakura's little, "Aah," at his announcement was further evidence of her unfamiliarity, though she did press the indicated button after being shown. While she had minimal hopes that it would be as straightforward to use as radios were back home, there was no point in holding off in finding out.

She looked away from the omnicomm and took his hand, shaking it firmly. Nice to know some means of communication held up, even if the verbal cues made no real sense.

"Really? I can't imagine why." Sakura was completely sincere (pink didn't fit in with either a tough-guy image, or a prankster's general profile), though from his tone she had a feeling 'punks' meant something to him it didn't mean to her. "Thanks for the pointer, Marco. I had it on, but getting it back again... well, you saw how well that was going."

"Because then they'd never have to dye it, duh," Marco said, as if this explained everything. "And you probably pressed the button again and turned it off. Either that or it's broken forever," Marco's grin had a mischievous glint to it - hey, she should be able to tell that he's joking, right?

In this case, yes, she could. Sakura raised an eyebrow at the statement about dye that still was nonsensical to her, then glanced back at the strange technology with a small smile. "And then what? I'd be stuck only talking to people in person? That's a horrifying thought."

Ah, but should she really be talking so lightly? Person to person interaction was a standard back home. So really... "How important is it that we keep these things with us at all times?"

"A fate worse than death," Marco said, still grinning. "You definitely need to avoid that at any cost."

He shrugged. "It's useful to keep around. You won't hear the announcements people make otherwise, and you can always use it to contact people. It won't kill you if you don't have it, though."

She let herself smile, shaking her head. Humor always had a place, if she wasn't entirely appreciative of it at the moment. "Still sounds wiser to get used to it. When you say hear, are you speaking figuratively?"

If there was a hidden radio function, Sakura wanted to know. Radios at least made sense.

"Yeah, it's just text. You can use the comm rings for some freaky mental communication though, and you don't even have to worry about anyone hacking any locked posts. Well, unless there's a psychic nearby, in which case you're pretty much screwed."

Sakura tried nodding like she understood, while her mental processes went something like the following:

Hacking a locked post? Do people get that bored? Do we have free access to axes or something? And who locks a post? Wait, what do posts have to do with text communication? Unless he means like something you post up... on a board. Is this thing really called a board? You post texts on it, so maybe. Or maybe it's the same idea? And how do you hack it? Where do psychics even come into things? And how psychic are we talking? Even the Yamanaka Clan can't talk more than tenuously with their own clan members, right?

"Then nothing's fool-proof, which isn't exactly surprising. The comm rings, though -- if it's mental communication, how do you signal an individual or group to speak with? Concentrate?"

Absolutely ludicrous.

"Yeah, you just think the name of who you want to talk to and then whatever you want to send to them. It's pretty easy," Marco said, shrugging. Course, it was probably a lot easier for him than others, seeing as he'd had plenty of practice at using thoughtspeak.

Interesting. Sakura furrowed her brow, wondering if it was as easy as Marco said.

"Easy, right..."

Testing the theory, she focused on his name... which had the unintentional side effect of having her repeat his name mentally. If anything did send, it would be nothing more than his name, several times over.

Marco rolled his eyes, and used to comms to talk back. Yes, you've learned my name. Congratulations, he said, using the comms to talk back.

[[ooc: I guess there's not really any kind of rule, but generally people will use italics for stuff sent over the comms. also I hope it was alright if I assume Sakura did manage to use them?]]

"Oh." It'd really worked. This ridiculous, Yamanka Clan competing form of communication worked.

Baby steps, was all she said in return, looking more mystified than irritated -- for now. At least you know I was paying attention. And if she did choose to call him by anything else later, it would be an active choice. (Not that she was inclined to, but the point still stood.) "Can you talk to Stacy the same way?"

[[ ooc: Thank you! I wasn't sure, hence trying to do more implied "if this, then that" -- and I'm perfectly all right with the assumption! I was hoping you'd choose to make it either way as you liked. \o/ ]]

Whatever you say, Barbie, Marco sent back with a grin - and completely aware of the fact that she'll probably think he's forgotten her name.

He shrugged in response to her next question. "Yeah, but you can just yell out loud and say you want to talk to her. Hey, she's pretty much everywhere. Just don't try that in the city. Or in here, since I doubt she'd hear you over everyone else."

Tamping down on her irritation only managed to stop Sakura from snapping something back; with her luck in the nick name department, Barbie probably was something she'd hate being called. Especially since Sakura wasn't exactly difficult to remember, in her humble opinion. Her eyebrow twitched as she shifted her grip on the Omnicomm.

"What makes the city an exception?"
