"Going where I list, my own master total and absolute" (Part 2 - Diplomacy, Tourism, and Processing)

The trip down was uneventful. The view was gorgeous when the viewing window shields were raised again when they were through the atmosphere, especially as they passed down to Megalopolis, the simply-named giant city that was this world's capital. To the Earthlings there, the continents of this world would look vastly familiar, but that didn't mean ( Read more... )

"I am Councilman Allin An. These are Council Memmbers Orin Calad, Kanner Drayan, asmin Landala, and Bal Valad, respectively."

He gestured to each as he spoke.

"Please, allow us to lead you through the spaceport and to the Scanning Bay, so we can lower our personal anti-contaminant shields. Our sincere apologies for the inconvience but we have rigorous quarantine standards on our planet, to prevent the spread of xenobiological hazards. It's a requirement that all people entering the City are scanned. Then I'll brief the diplomats of your group on our situation, while the rest of you receive a tour of our fine capital city."

"Uh, do I need to run my legion of mana-construct minions through this scanner thing as well?"

The book normally wouldn't have even asked, but he'd been provoked into being on his so-called 'best behavior'. He'll show them! He'll show them ALL!

Dick bowed his head in greeting. "I am Lt. Commander Richard Grayson of the Transmigration Nine. These are Councilors Kang and Zetta." There was a large group, after all, and it would take time to mention all of them. "It is an honor to meet you all."

He glanced over the group, then nodded. "The scans should be acceptable." It was understandable, after all. Though if they hadn't managed to make everybody on the ship sick...

He shook himself. "I'll go first. Everybody, try to keep it orderly." He looked over them, stopping on a few. "And everybody be on your best behavior."

Yes, Lash. That really was mostly aimed at you. (And mostly ignoring Zetta.)

With that said, Dick turned and walked through the scanners. Might as well be the first one through.

"Well met, Councilors."

Kang gave them a polite, respectful bow before giving the scanners one careful look and following Dick through them. He didn't like the strange tingly feeling they gave him all over, but he ignored it; the having to spit in a cup and swabbing the inside of his cheek seemed a bit strange too. He could understand why it was necessary, though.

Ildraniath bowed politely. She wasn't speaking just yet - she didn't actually have rank, beyond her own self-nomination to the negotiation team. Although she gave the scanners a rather pointed, disapproving look, she followed through, like all the rest. She'd been subjected worse, although nothing quite like this.

How inelegant and... crude. She hoped the rest of their medical technology didn't follow in the same manner.

Zedd couldn't help but roll his eyes (or whatever eyes were hidden behind his visor) at the groveling the rest of the crew was doing. Of course, the whole scanning thing and making sure everyone was clean was making the others throw fits.

What do you expect with a guy with no skin?

So humiliating...! he thought, passing on, paying no mind to what he just went through or with the others at the moment.

Hey! Lash gave a small look at Dick before standing in the far back, letting everyone else pass first to make sure the head count was right and everyone was accounted for. She had promised Leon she'd be good (this time) after all, and if there was something the wunderkind didn't like, it was personal failure. Even if it meant reporting to the Lt. Commander.

Alright, it was mostly because she had a condition hovering over her head. Leon had just appointed her as an Ensign for this mission, she wasn't going to let terrible things happen and loose rank as quickly as she had gotten it. So the wunderkind with something to prove and to loose was surprisingly quiet right now.

Lex also gave a polite, respectful bow. But, unlike the others, didn't see the need to bite his tongue. There was no reason to not say hello.

"We're delighted to be here, Councilors. This world is absolutely breathtaking, and I think I speak for us all when I say we look forward to seeing more of it. In due time, of course," he added, heading towards the scanners.

Zouichi suppressed a sigh. The diplomatic hat dance, already. He wasn't crazy about the scanning, either; his DNA and accompanying enhancements had actually a zealously-guarded corporate secret back home, and who knew what these people would do with any information they gleaned?

But he went through the procedure just like everyone else.

"We are all pleased to meet you," Bal greeted with a polite nod at the group. She looked over at Zetta to answer his question. "If you could please make them pass as well, Councilor Zetta. We have learned not to take precautions lightly in the past."

Jr. had given a quick, polite nod of the head and a wave of his hand when the councilors introduced themselves. "Gaignun Kukai Jr., I'm a member of Security aboard the ship. Nice to meet you all, too!"

He didn't find the idea of the scanners as strange as some of the others. Having so many different settlements across the star systems, and discovering even more, precaution was a good thing to have. Especially when the visitors were unfamiliar. He stepped on up to the scanners when it was his turn.

Querl was simply fascinated with the technology. He kept looking around instead of looking at the Councilors. He noted the aesthetics, of course, but Coluans did not have as great an appreciation for it as other species did, or so he'd noticed. Function over beauty. Intelligence over frivolity.

The scans were not particularly desirable but not unexpected and Querl nodded as an indication that he did not object. A show of good faith was needed for negotiation.

Howard's getting the distinct feeling that given that only the diplomats are wanted, they're about to find out that this planet runs on pulverized human souls, or that Soylent Green is tourists. Why are they all here?

He goes through the scanners, raising his head only to ask a question. "Out of curiosity, what are these scanners for?" They can't just be for germs if the medical technology is that good.

"There are far worse contaminants besides bacteria. Super-viruses, aerial poisons and prion diseases, radioactivity, magical infections..."

He went on, "And of course, there's the fact that our medical technology is highly advanced and adaptable, but that's no good if someone dies before they realize they're even infected and don't manage to seek medical aid in time. There's a saying common on many worlds: Prevention is the most effective medicine. In fact, you'll find that much of our specialization is in preventative medicine. It's far easier to heal mortal injury and disease if you've prepared for it."

Rory stepped forward, frowning faintly at the scanner as he did so. He understood most of the babble at least, which likely a bit better than some present. "Prevention is useful, yes, but how do you manage to prepare for a wide range of illness and injury without foreknowledge? Are your vaccinations that all encompassing?"

He spat and let then swab his cheek, walking through to join the rest of the current party. The tingle was strange, but not unexpected with the depth of the scan.
