You can't update the inner HTML of a select box in IE under XP SP2 due to bugs in the handling of the element! After much fretting, and hair pulling (yeah, I wish), I decided that you might as well regenerate the entire select tag by sticking it in a div that you CAN update. Grrrr, Arrrrg.
