[Chris + Jill] Short ride to a temporary home

May 03, 2010 19:01

Had Jill stirred since first dozing off, she would have felt bad. After parting from Sheva at a branch of the B.S.A.A. African H.Q., she and Chris had promptly set out for the North American station some couple hours away. She'd been determined to use that long car ride to actually talk to Chris -- with talk being something more than the rushed ( Read more... )

Chris was content to let her rest. He knew Wesker ran her ragged, and she would've needed any kind of sleep she could get. The roads were less than optimal, but Chris didn't care. Wesker was dead, Jill was safe, and there were no hordes of zombies, or Plagas infected villagers trying to crack their skulls open ( ... )

All but dead to the world, Jill wasn't disturbed in the least by being moved. Not until Chris went to put her down and her back touched the comforter did she finally stir -- by way of her free hand immediately snapping onto the space between his neck and his shoulder in a tight grip, prepared to act as leverage if she needed to move or a weapon if she needed to fight. It was an instinctive reaction, one learned by her muscles rather than her mind, and the reflex was so deeply engraved that she didn't even realize that she had moved until she actually awoke several seconds later.

"What..." Blinking away sleep, she stared up at Chris as she released him before sending a puzzled glance around the room, lingering fatigue clouding her senses and sight. "Where are we?" she murmured.

Chris had to chuckle slightly at the reaction. It was a sad but expected reaction to the events the two of them had been in. After all, zombies and parasites take a toll on a person's mind.

"Mornin' Sleeping Beauty," he said, releasing her and taking a drink from a water bottle he had purchased for the ride, offering Jill some afterward.

"We're about three blocks from HQ. Jack said that 'due to recent events' we were given leave to report back in the morning for our plane tickets back to the states. Even told me to put the room on the company card."

He moved to sit on the bed next to Jill, one hand resting on her shoulder. "How ya holdin' up, partner?"

Jill smiled as she gratefully accepted the water. "Thanks." Taking a moment to relieve her parched throat, she then nodded and brushed her bangs from her eyes. "Fine," she replied -- an automatic response, but a moment's consideration made her more honest.

"Better," she corrected, her smile more sheepish now. "I probably look a lot worse than I feel, anyway." She glanced down at the dirt and dried blood just below her collarbone; how long had it been since she'd had a real shower? "Sorry about that," she went on, waving a hand vaguely towards the door. "Last thing I want is to make you tote me around anymore."
