I live in MN myself and on MNcare, Mncare is paying for my counsling, my endo and my hormones, with the exceptions of the small co-pays.

MNcare wont pay for gender surgerys as far as i know.

ive also changed my name while under MN care to my new femal name, and my gender maerkers and such as well.

remeber MN has more trans protection laws then any other state, and is overall the most trans friendlt state. Mn was also the first state with trans protection laws.

disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, doctor, or anyone of any importance really... take my advice for whatever it is worth.

If you are legally male, then you are legally male... if they cover something for other guys, then they would have to cover it for you unless they have specific clauses saying that you are exempt. Try and get a copy of the full, official terms and conditions and see if trans stuff shows up anywhere in there.

If there is nothing in there on trans stuff, and you can afford it (not sure if you need to pay up front, or what your system is), I say just do it and send them the bill. The old adage: "it is easier to ask forgiveness then permission" is very accurate in cases like this. If you give them a heads up that their plan is not clear then they may take the time to make it clear in a way you do not want.

i think its worth a try - give it a call - i'm pretty sure however that insurance companies can sort of be like "oops, nope we wont actually sorry we made a mistake" after it happens - however you can appeal and write them a shit ton of letters and so forth- it will be effort, time and stress for sure if that happens but who knows?- i'm pretty sure dr leis down in philadelphia (not positive) will do that as well just incase it becomes worth it to travel to philadelphia

good luck

the taxcourt held that an individuals gender disorder was a disease within the meaning of the code sec 213(d)(1)(a)and(9)(b) and, therefor, the cost of the taxpayer's hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery were deductible medical expenses under code sec. 213(a).

However cosmetic surgery is not deductable under code sec 213(d)(9)(b). the taxpayer (genetic male) was diagnosed with GID by a licensed psycotherapist and underwent treatment to change her appearance from male to female.
the seriousness of the condition and severity of the taxpayers imparment of GID as a mental disorder and treatment being sex reasignment surgery within the meaning of code sec 213(d)(1)(a) and (9)(b) and therfore not cosmetic surgery and medicaly necassary
