Summary: Lestrade throughout the years. Gen (if you squint John and Sherlock hints, and if you want to, Lestrade --> Sherlock). Very belated prompt fic for rosalui.

Author’s Notes: This is so, SO rushed. But I just wanted to write so badly, and this happened. Spoilers for pretty much the entire series.

Wonderful job! ♥ I really love how Lestrade's observations change over the course of the piece - these changes are subtle, but they say so much. I also really love the descriptions of Sherlock, John, and their relationship. It works so well. Marvelous job!

Thank you!

The changes were supposed to be subtle. I generally tried to go for 'understated' writing because I think, if you don't write romance, the power of the piece should lie in the prose. So I'm glad that ...might have worked out?

I loved writing John and Sherlock through Lestrade's eyes. I hope it doesn't come across as too shippy because I think their relationship is beautiful without the implications as well.

You're very welcome :)

The subtlety works really well in this piece - and definitely understated. There is a lot of power in the subtle details, which I just loved in this.

Oh, not too shippy at all. It was just the right amount, without a lot of fluff but very honest too. Genuine. Oh, their relationship is all kinds of beautiful ♥

Beautiful and so sad at the end. T_T I think the only that stopped me from bursting into tears was that we all know Sherlock will come back. XD
Sherlock, Lestrade has accepted, is both extraordinary and very predictable: he hates Anderson, Donovan hates him, and he usually shows off. A lot. Oh, this is so true. I love all of Lestrade's observations here; he's a lot smarter than Sherlock gives him credit for.
And the bits about John are heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, especially this one: Because, though John is quiet, and his eyes downcast, he can see the pain - can see the caring, the unbroken, unadulterated grief coming from John that isn’t just sadness over having lost a brilliant consulting detective, but a person that, he realises now, lingered somewhere there underneath the fantastic deductions and fast speech.

Thank you so much, darling <3.

I think Reichenbach is so sad because, even if we know Sherlock is *alive*, he still leaves everyone behind. There's still people coping with his supposed 'death'. And that makes the ep hard to digest.

I always thought Lestrade was a reasonably good detective, and he's definitely observant -- especially because he recognises Sherlock's brilliance, but still knows he's a man-child XD.

Oh John. I felt so sad when I wrote those lines ):

Ooh, really insightful take on Lestrade. I really like how Sherlock (and John) make Lestrade reconsider all his stereotypes and Greg does change his perceptions, which is what sets him apart from other; how he questions his career, feels bad about using Sherlock but can't think of anything to offer and, finally his empathy for John's grief.

And I second shaitanah's comment, this line the caring, the unbroken, unadulterated grief coming from John that isn’t just sadness over having lost a brilliant consulting detective, but a person that, he realises now, lingered somewhere there underneath the fantastic deductions and fast speech. is fantastic <3

Thank you! This piece was spontaneous, so I'm glad I got so many lovely, delightful comments on this *________*

I tried to go for insightful, so I'm pleased it worked -- I'm glad it worked for you. (Yes, useless reply but I've never been good at this, but still <3).

<3. I like that line too.

I like how you didn't over romanticise the relationship between lestrade and sherlock, and kept it true to canon, with Lestrade not complimenting him, sort of taking him for granted almost?

sad at the end tho. poor greg.

Oh, yes over-romanticising would have made this piece less effective. And I do think Lestrade might nearly taken Sherlock for granted...

Yeah ): I don't think you realise what you have until it's gone.
