I like a lot of what Peter Hamilton has done. Pandora's Star is very good - the trouble is that the second half of it, Judas Unchained, is... a really bad ending. There's a lot of awesome moments, but a lot of the time he seems to be saying "And, er, then instead of having to do really horrible things, the characters... found out that everything was fine!" It might be an idea to read the first one and then pretend it was written by Frank Herbert?

If you can find his book of short stories, A Second Chance at Eden, that's well worth the read. Good writing, interesting plots, some quite haunting ideas. And Sonnie's Edge - a story in that book, the first thing of his I ever read - bit into my brain a long time ago and has yet to let go.
