I am taking this now and pretty frustrated by it. There's no way for me to distinguish between my gender (male) and my experience (trans). Is my gender identity group male or trans? How can I account for the privilege I have when I am read as cis male and my marginalization when my trans status is known? I have opposite feelings about being male and being trans, just as I have opposite social experiences. This survey feels like it was only written for people who are open or visibly trans.
Hey there. So sorry to hear that it is frustrating to complete. The questions are intentionally open for interpretation, as you're right, people will identify more strongly with some identities (e.g, men) over others. And of course all of the comfort or outness may be context dependent.
Like any survey, it's just about doing the best you can with the options provided, knowing that some of the items may not fit totally.
Honestly, it might be worth it to revise the survey and how it is structured if you truly want to get varied participants of trans experience, such as people who choose to generally not disclose their medical history. Otherwise many people will just self select out of participating.
