Overall I liked Crash - though I admit I'm confused as I thought it would have come out in theatres too late to be considered for this year's awards. At any rate, I did have issues with the intersecting story and how the film's premise (race) was almost shoved down the viewer's throat at every moment; I thought it would have been much better in a more subtle way. I guess it seemed a little pedantic to me. And Brendan Fraser? I can't take him seriously at all - he's still Encino Man all the way. Between the casting of him and Bullock, the rest of the film's extraordinary performances really stuck out and those two just seemed to flounder and make the film really awkward, in my opinion.
I enjoyed Crash, don't get me wrong, I just thought it was so problematic and disappointing with regards to the race question, and felt like a TV show, where the issues are plain and shoved down your throat. I had to express my dissatisfaction at its inevitable Oscar noms, which it did get.
You know how in some classes, things are shorthanded and so many assumptions are made for the sake of time? I felt that way about Crash. I like feeling more like I'm reading a text in all its glory when I watch a film [not always, but for a complex premise like race, I expect more]. And yeah, this is probably Bullock's best performance, but I've always hated her and Fraser. Did you see Gods and Monsters though? I liked that one.
