on turning 30

There was a time in my life when Livejournal was of the utmost importance. It had effectively replaced the pen & paper journals I'd kept throughout my adolescence and college years. I had all these ambitions of being the next Puce, recording observations of the world around me ( Read more... )

Well, this gives me hope that maybe by the time I'm 30 things won't be so shitty.

Honestly, if there's anyone on my friendslist I have hope for in terms of long-term happiness, it's you. You have such a strong (and awesome!) personality that I just know you'll be able to cut through all the bullshit in order to find the thing that makes you happiest.

And you really do hit your stride, in time. 30 isn't necessarily the marker; some people find it way earlier, some way later.

For me, 30-ish worked out just fine. I was seriously atwitter and all-over-the-place when it came to EVERYTHING in my mid-20's. I was depressed and convinced I'd never have a serious relationship or a job I enjoyed. But around 28, things started to slowly click into place.

Not to say it's going to happen without effort, of course. I mean, I found a grad program that I had tremendous faith in, and it paid off. And I kissed a LOT of toads. But you know what you want, and who you want to be. So with those goals in mind, the choices that present themselves will be easier to make.

Go you! The scariest thing is deciding to change your life, but when you get to the point you were at, what have you got to lose? I have a friend who is utterly miserable with hers but too scared to change. Unfortunately she's in her 50s, so the clock is ticking a little louder.

If she needs some help or maybe would like to hear about the experience of someone who has upturned her entire life (and resulted in success), then send her to me!
