i think organisms go extinct for the same reasons that cultures do. That organisms are fighting all the time against entropy -- they want to find out what all the possible pitfalls may be and make assurances against them until they can feel comfortable with their way of life, whether by biological, intellectual, technological, or emotional ( Read more... )

According to wikipedia, "It is primarily prolonged exposure to the sound of water in motion that stimulates the beavers to build." Originally, I had a point but I forgot it while I was reading about beavers.

When you say "the world tends towards entropy" to me that is saying the world tends toward some value in units of J/K. Or, more specifically, J/kg*K. I had a similar idea once but it only worked well as long as I didn't try to stretch the analogy too far.

That's been my experience. Your mileage may vary.
