Character Name: Yosuke Hanamura
Character Series: Persona 4
Age: Birthdate specified (June, 22, 1995) by the game, but his age isn’t. However, the game takes place in 2009, so one would assume he is both fourteen and fifteen during the game’s one-year timeline. However, he is also one year away from college, during the game, as third year NPCs at Yasoinaba High are taking their college entrance exams for next year, and he is a second year. It’s all a bit confusing. For the specifics of playing him, I’m going to go with fifteen.
Background: Yosuke Hanamura is a Japanese city boy, born and bred. If it’s fast, shiny, impersonal, and blares loud music, he’s right at home with it. Growing up alongside a crop of friends with forgettable faces, hanging out and having ‘a good time’ for Yosuke always meant a trip to the mall, buzzed on noise and lights, having meaningless conversation, and tossing well-meant pick up lines at girls who weren’t taking the bait. Or at least, that was the norm for a while…
All of that changed, however, one dreadful summer day, when his father got the promotion of his lifetime, and the one that would, in Yosuke’s mind, effectively ruin his own lifetime. Japan’s own version of Walmart, ‘Junes’-Buy Everything, Buy it on Sale, 2-for-1-promoted his father to regional manager of the chain. Regrettably for Yosuke’s social life, the region in question was Yasoinaba, and his new nesting ground would be in its central boonie, Inaba City.
It’s not that Inaba was boring, per say-- ….it’s that it was SO MUCH lamer than that. The nightlife consisted of fishing with a man so old that he probably knew Moses on a personal basis. During the day, the options were a little flashier. …You could… uh. Go for a walk. Or eat topsicles until your stomach rotted out with sugar. Or study. …Anyway, you get Yosuke’s point. If Inaba got anymore drab, it would revert into black and white.
Worse, small towns means small talk, and small talk travels fast. In the blur of the city, he was just a nobody, another kid in another uniform, nothing special or important. In Inaba, however, overnight he became the Heir to Junes; not much of a title, in his opinion. Much like earning a crown to a sinking ship whose crew is about to commit mutiny. Junes’ convenient sell-all motto and bottom-feeder prices were raking in the customers, and Inaba’s local shops (already suffering from a lack of tourism and patronage) began to close down in a domino effect. The ire from townsfolk going bankrupt rubbed off on the children of said-townsfolk, and those children rubbed elbows with Yosuke at school and on the street. The rumors about the Junes Evil Empire harassed him, and a little more literally, part-time workers began to harass him as well, taking advantage of the fact that he was the manager’s son, and using him as a verbal punching-bag for when they had employee and customer complaints, and demanding both favours and crowd control. For Yosuke, it was a pain-in-the-ass nightmare, that had hired him for minimum wage.
Nothing much looked like it was going to change. Days continued their uninteresting trudge, and Yosuke fumbled through them on his broken bike, saving up for a better ride-basically the only dim light of hope he had to cling to, as he might dramatically put it. Nonetheless, it was with thanks to his less-than-stellar bicycle that he first met Seta Souji. Similarly to himself, Souji was a transfer student from the city, and easy to get along with. So easy, in fact, that he fit right in among Yosuke and one of the classmates he better knew, Kung-Fu enthusiast, Chie Satonaka. It was during an animated group conversation that Chie first made both young men promise to watch the ‘Midnight Channel’, a rumored path to finding one’s true love. At midnight, on rainy days, a blank TV would supposedly show the watcher a glimpse of their soul mate.
So… imagine Yosuke’s surprise when, one rainy night, it turned out to be true. Or, at least, the blurred image of a woman did appear on his TV screen, as he’d awkwardly impart to Souji and Chie the next day during a class break. More surprising still was that both classmates had shared the same experience, and seen the same woman-creepy, huh? Creepy, but they could laugh it off. Just like they could laugh off Souji’s insistence that, upon trying to touch the woman-his entire arm got sucked into the television set.
Haha! Crazy dream, right? Souji should take it easy on the yakisoba, there, before bed. But, on the subject of television sets, Chie insists that her family is in the market for a new one, and His Junior Majesty of Junes agrees to a group trip to check out flatscreen televisions after school.
…Which, in typical RPG fashion, becomes a group trip into a flat screen after school. Landing hard on the other side of the TV-there’s another side to a TV?! And it’s a foggy place, filled with creepy chalk outlines, and devoid totally of human life?!-marks Yosuke’s first trip into the TV world. Which proves to be a little too much for his delicate bladder… especially, when searching for an exit, the group stumbles upon a room with faces torn off of posters, red splotches, and a suspiciously placed noose…
Oh, did I forget to mention the murder? Yasoinaba has become a little more interesting ever since the body of an anchorwomen exposed for having an affair with a government official showed up, dead and hanging upsidedown, in the electrical wires of a sleepy street. The murder seems oh-so-much more realistic to the student who found the body, a wiry girl named Saki Konishi, who works part-time at Junes. It wouldn’t be a mistake to say that Yosuke gets the ‘little brother’ treatment from her, but based on his pink cheeks and better manners, would have liked to be maybe more.
‘Would have’, anyway.
It’s very lucky for Yosuke & Co. that a furious and furry mascot by the name of Teddy comes along, dropping hints that humans aren’t welcome in the TV world, and that there had been a lot of commotion lately. He finds and exit and all but punts them out with the eerie knowledge that this place they’ve stumbled into may have quite a bit to do with the recent murder…
But, hey, woah, woah, woah. Murder? A job for the police. A world inside the TV? An idea for whack jobs and nuts. Yosuke is only too glad to shove all that away, case closed, sealed, thrown out like yesterday’s garbage, which he’ll get another face full of next time he rides his bike right into it, as usual. Usual is exactly what he’d like to get back to, please-
Until another murder takes place. The murder of Ms. Saki Konishi, found tangled in electrical wires. Saki Konishi; the girl that had appeared on the midnight channel, when Yosuke first watched. And who appeared again the following night, in a much darker episode.
This time, it’s personal. So personal, that Yosuke is willing to push logic and limb aside, to re-enter the television with Souji’s help, with the steadfast hope of discovering some inkling of a clue as to who tormented and murdered his puppy crush. Once again inside the television, they meet Teddy, who greets them with suspicion, and only agrees to aid them once they make a vow; they’ll find the criminal.
…Even if that means facing Shadows.
Wait. What?
Shadows. Monsters, part of the human ego that chipped off, broken thoughts discarded and pushed away by those too weak to face them. Shadows are easily defeated; by Persona. Persona is later revealed to be those same, harsh parts of the ego, only embraced by their owners, and controlled. Souji is the first to release his Persona-effectively protecting Yosuke and Teddie, and granting them entrance into the TV-world version of ‘Konishi Liquors’; Saki-sempai’s family store.
They’re in for a fascinating greeting. Saki-sempai, though dead, would seem to resonate in this place. Her voice was easily heard, permeating the premises. And it spoke her deep, hidden thoughts.
Junes has ruined her family business. To make enough money to leave Yasoinaba’s boredom-trap, she’d had to defy her family, and take on a part-time job with the enemy. They scorned her for it, and the blame she laid easily on those pricks who ran Junes. In fact, she states very clearly that she’s always wanted to tell Yosuke something… that she dislikes him intensely. Her kindness act was purely because he was the Boss’ son, and she couldn’t afford to piss him off. She never told him how irritating she found him, in life.
This, understandably, triggers Yosuke’s own insecurities, and as he begins to question the voice, until someone teases him, asking if he is going to begin crying now.
This ‘someone’ is Yosuke’s own shadow. Taking on his likeness, only a bit sketchier, he mocks Yosuke openly, and in his own voice, begins to berate him and reveal his deep-set secrets; the ones he’s locked so deep, and is so ashamed of, that he won’t even admit them to himself.
Yosuke is exposed as being less-than-friendly. His shadow explains that his cheerful demeanor is simply a ploy to get people to like him, and in truth, that Yosuke is bitter, and terrified of being alone-so much so, that he has to fill his world up with people, and superficial relationships. Yosuke is also bored. Despite knowing better, his real motive behind entering the television again, despite their pact not to, wasn’t at all in Saki-sempai’s honour, or because he was suffering from her loss. But because he thought it would be a kick, a break in the monotony, and hey, he might even be a hero~
Of course, Yosuke denies these claims, stating that the shadow is in no way a part of him. That allows his shadow to take its freedom, turning into nothing less than a monster with a bratty attitude. Souji’s defeat of Yosuke’s shadow, and Yosuke’s own submission thereafter to the fact that; yes… those thoughts and feelings are, in fact, a part of him; changes his shadow into his own Persona, Jiraya.
Over time, Souji, Yosuke, and Chie form a growing investigation squad that explores the connection between the murders, TV appearances, and the Midnight Channel - on which, friends and school mates keep appearing. Their theory that those who appear on the Midnight Channel are kidnapped, and then set to be murdered by their own Shadows, is only partially correct. The mystery that spawns before them leads them on many false trails, and eventually, to the very shrouded truth; the murderer, the kidnapper, and the one who constructed the entire plot.
During the one-year period of the game, Yosuke does a lot of growing up. He does find it within himself to forgive Saki-sempai, and moreover, avenge her; because no matter her personal opinion of him, she had the right to live. In his various meetings with Souji, he forms a deep bond with the person who will become his best friend, reveling that, for the first time, he is glad to be having profound conversations, and he knows that the relationships he is forming with the members of the investigation squad really mean something. That it is not where you are, but who you’re with, that makes for the spice of life.
…And man, does his life get spicy. Between getting roped into cross-dressing pageants, camping trips with Mystery Food X, and his new live-in room mate; after all, when Teddy finally obtains a human form, he needs a place to live, and a job-and Junes is hiring; Yosuke’s juggling act between sliding by on midterms, battling shadows, and… trying to survive his friend’s cooking… becomes the ride of his life.
…Better than that crappy bike, anyway.
Personality: Yosuke is nothing short of full-blown, walking, talking, crashing comic relief. He speaks in the colloquial, has a flare for dramatizing situations he finds painful or awkward, and is always there to point out the obvious in the manner you least wanted to hear it. Cheerful, if a bit pessimistic at times, Yosuke is none-the-less a pretty friendly kind of guy. He’s the type to do the right thing, but not without his fair share of complaints, especially if he has to go beyond the norm of human compassion. Still, with a little bit of a hero complex, strong morals, and a loyal personality, Yosuke practices a lot of grinning-and-bearing-it; he puts up with more than he says, and perhaps doesn’t complain enough about certain aspects of his life.
A little closed off, not quick to talk about personal issues, he’s pretty understanding about those of other people; though that doesn’t mean he won't poke fun at them until you threaten to break his nose. Yosuke is, unfortunately, also very passionate at times; a little sensitive, and very quick to get irritated by the wrong set of circumstances, if someone has the misfortune of blending the two together, and irritating him about something he’s sensitive on, he can be blindsigheted by his own frustration and affront, and in this state, often makes not the wisest of decisions. Still, he puts his faith in his friends to pull him out of that situation when it occurs, and listens to them, even when he does not entirely agree. He isn’t soft spoken, and will voice his opinions with ease-but in some cases, he’ll forfeit his opinion to someone who he respects.
Yosuke is also a little bit on the clumsy side; very bumbling, and quick to make the same mistake twice. And a third time. And a fourth-
Well, you get it.
And he’s into the ladies, I might add. As poor as his attempts at getting a date are, he’s nothing, if not a teenage guy first. He can be very excitable, and as the character described best by the ‘Magician Arcana’ within the game, characterized by ‘action’, he also tends to bolt into situations with confidence in his team and in himself, even if he is otherwise, when alone, sometimes insecure and lonesome. He obviously does have a caring streak a mile wide, is pretty down-to-earth, and could, in a nutshell, be described outwardly as ‘your typical nice, normal guy, who approves of slacking and snacking.’
Item Lost: Yellow Bicycle. As crappy as the thing is, for Yosuke, it’s a means of getting around, and a small sampling of what he really wants; a dirt bike. Even if it’s not in the best condition, he still uses it to get around with almost staggering allegiance to its squeaky wheels and busted breaks.
Sample Journal Entry:
I- wha…? Just where the hell am I? I was just-
Actually, uh. Where… was I? Come to think of it, I can’t really put my finger on it. Man… I don’t recognize anything in this place. This just isn’t right.
Maybe I hit my head on something? Nah, no bumps or bruises. And… no service on this cell phone, either. Agh, this is too weird, I can’t remember a thing!
Dah, guess I’ll just look around, or something… there has to be a police station around here. But what am I supposed to say…? ‘Sorry, I’d go home, but I don’t remember where that is’.
Man, this just isn’t my day.
