maple bacon monkey bread. a long overdue cross-post from iron_trash

Dec 29, 2008 21:18

Hokay, so I already posted to this for the iron_trash competition a while back with biscuits as the secret ingredient, and totally forgot to post it here.

But, since I have now made it several more times and thoroughly LOVE this recipe, I thought it was about time to share with those of you that are not iron_trash members.

So, without further ado, i will go through the rigorous effort of copying and pasting the entry from the other community. HAH. I'm trashy AND lazy ;)
.......................................................................................................................................................

omg you guys this is so orgasmic-yummy. i'm surprised i actually just threw random stuff i thought would go together and it turned out so well!
first, a little bit about me. I'm Jess, and i'm a college student, still living in the dorms, although i'm not on the meal plan so i have to fend for myself food wise (by choice. cafeteria food is soooo sub-par for me). so i used the microwave for this whole recipe. if you so choose, you can bake this in the oven just like any other monkey bread. it will probably turn out better than mine!
so, if the ingredient list isn't trashy enough for you (although who can argue with the trashiness of adding bacon and/or bacon grease to anything and everything?), then maybe my cooking methods will be? lol.

it all started with this:

(ignore the cream cheese frosting and that lame excuse for butter, neither were used...

now, let's start cooking, shall we?

ingredients:
1/2lb. bacon, cut into bite-sized pieces
2 oz bag of generic brand chopped walnuts
1 whomp pack of buttermilk biscuits (would you believe me if i told you that the grocery store i went to didn't have their own generic brand? oh well, i had coupons!)
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. maple syrup. (or whatever you have. i didn't feel like splurging on the real stuff so i just used the sugar free stuff that i already had and needed to use up)

the last 2 ingredients (sugar and syrup) i didn't really measure. that's just an estimate. i tend to just throw crap together without measuring. so if it looks like enough, then cool. if not, add more!

the step-by-step

first, grab your bacon pieces and throw them in a glass baking dish

toss it in the microwave and nuke it for about 8-10 minutes, till it looks done.
don't worry if it's still a little mushy, it will cook more in the last stage of baking...
then take out the bacon. LEAVE THE GREASE IN THE DISH!

mmmmmm...... bacon grease

while the bacon is cooling, add the brown sugar and maple syrup to your bacon grease
and cook for 2 minutes in the microwave till it's bubbly

meanwhile, whomp open your biscuits and cut them in quarters

and chop up your bacon into little bits (sorry no picture of this).
now pull out your syrup-y mixture and add the bacon and your chopped walnuts, and stir.
then add your biscuit pieces and stir until it looks good and well-incorporated

..and a close-up

now, stick it all into the microwave and cook at 70% power for 7 to 10 minutes, until done. you can tell if it's done if you can see that signature flakeyness when you pick at the biscuit pieces.

(if you have an oven available, i guess i'd say cook it at 350 F for who knows how long?... till it looks done!)

it will look like this

now i know it will be hard, but please wait a few minutes before devouring. you will be greatly rewarded.

to serve either turn out the whole thing onto a platter, upside-down so that the yummy juices run over and through into the nooks and crannies, and let guests (or just you) pick it apart and gobble, one piece at a time.

or, you can just serve yourself up a bowl, making sure to spoon some of the syrup in the bottom of the dish up over your mound of maple-bacon pillows.

NOW EAT!

thanks for reading!
