LIfe in India is tough; there is no denying that. I agree with your view on Friedman's purpose: to make us more aware of how lucky we are. I did not initially see that side of his discussion, but it is now quite apparent.
When you mention that his intended audience is young adults I agree. I would suggest that he is also directing his writing towards a slightly older generation when he insists that outsourcing will create a "safer world for our own 20-year-olds."
To answer your question simply: no. To be expected to not only learn a new language, but to forget your native accent in order to acquire a position at such a place as a call-center is incredibly hard to believe.
