Japanese baking recipes never work out. I really don't think home baking in Japan (or even using Japanese baking recipes in America) works at all. Just buy at the store. My host mother tried to make a cake in her rice cooker once... it failed. I tried to make a cake in my rice cooker recently, and it came out all pretty... but it tasted really blah. I tried to make a roll cake with anko filling from a Japanese recipe, but the cake part didn't rise, cuz apparently they don't use baking soda or powder?? The filling was fine tho, so I just used an English recipe for the cake the second time. My point is, it's prolly wasn't you, it was just Japan hahaha. Buy baked goods at the store. Homemade wagashi, that works a lot better in my experience ^_^
BTW, I'm DLing torchwood from bittorrent now! how many seasons are there? I could only find seasons 1 and 2 in batches. I warn you, though, I also got the L Word, so that might take watching priority lol
I routinely made cookies in the toaster oven back in Nagoya. You kind of have to babysit them though, so they don't burn. I made a small orange cake too, but the top burned before the inside cooked through (but mushy cake is sort of good so I ate it anyway).
Most of what I heard/read was "Put it on a low setting and watch them carefully" which is what I did, but I had the same outcome as the cake: The tops burned but the insides didn't cook fully. They were still semi-yummy though. I'm glad I at least tried.
I have some muffin mix that I bought too (before I realized there was no way to control the temperature) but I'm thinking I'll hold off for a while and try those at a later time. I like to bake, but I may just buy the things I KNOW are delicious from the store :)
If you want to bake, it's really worthwhile to invest in one of those microwave/oven/toaster combos. They're only like $200-300 and they turn things out more or less like an oven... I baked up some chicken wings last night :)
