Oh wow, that's pretty scary! But I'm glad you weren't hurt and your bag wasn't actually stolen. I'm really impressed that you spent so long talking to the police despite language barrier issues, I don't even know how I would approach a koban about a crime nowadays... Good luck in Tokyo!!
LOL-It wasn't that bad? I mean, it could have been a lot worse, and I think the thing that scared me most was that my purse had both my home address AND house key, so they could have cleaned out the apartment in barely an hour.
The report included everything, from the EXACT re-enactment of the situation, right down to the reason WHY the silly foreigner reporting the issue could speak Japanese! They even wrote "I can speak and read and write Japanese because I studied at ----- University in Tokyo for a year about 5 years ago" then made me sign the bottom as though I had written it! Also, I don't have a hanko, so I had to "stamp" my seal using a finger-print. It was kind surreal.
They were SUPER nice though. One of them realized that we were getting all uncomfortable and sat down to talk to us in regular Japanese and ask us less serious questions, like where we were from and what our hobbies were, then ran across the street to buy us warm drinks. By the time Anne and I left, he was all "Look at this cool pen...is it American??" :P
