I am so gonna be a protective parent someday. hopefully not ridiculously so, but hey, won't know until we get there.

Don't need to be sorry.
I am sure he has been on the subway with his mother enough to know how to ride it. And really, NYC is generally safe- even the subways. And really, there isn't much of a reason to kidnap a random kid- who knows if the parent can even try to pay any sort of ransom.

I didn't read the essay, but I think one reason why people don't like overprotective parents is that kids are in far, far more danger of being abused by their own parents -- or other people close to the family -- than by strangers.
