a cape/poncho type thing to protect my shoulders and neck from the sun. At this point it is usable, but I know i did a terrible job stitching. What type of stitching should I be be doing (by hand)? Sometimes I am doing a hemming to make the edges nicer and other times I am stitching pieces of it together (the collar to the rest). suggestions, oh great one?
sure; one of the sturdiest hand stitches is the simple back stitch. all that that means is that you take the needle and make a regular stitch, then go back half way and make a stitch on top of your first right in the middle of it, then go forward along the cloth a little more. then go back again half the length of your second stitch and stitch again forward. it'll look like a regular machine stitch on one side, and like one long connection of thread on the other. if you try to envision it, it's like making a loop. if this totally doesn't help you at all, i'll try to think of another way to describe it. or you can probably find it somewhere online :). anyway, it sounds like a cool idea-never would have thought of a poncho for the summer!
