Alistair stared blankly at at the newest Warden, all mental processes having been abruptly shut down at her rather innocent question. And it was innocent, Alistair was certain. For as little as he had gotten to know the woman, he was fairly sure she wasn't cruel enough to twist like that, glance over her shoulder at him like that, tempt him like that and really mean it.

Tali's voice was clipped, ringing across the empty engine room. "I still have a shotgun."

"Unless it's Grunt's shotgun, I don't think you'll be able to reach me from there." Garrus's calm drawl was as irritating as ever, his voice smoothly dual-toned and deep even across the comm link. Tali tried to ignore him and focus on the engine work before her.

As always, Garrus was completely unable to take a hint. "Besides, you wouldn't put holes in Shepard's ship. You love this ship. Or at least you loved the old one. And you seem pretty fond of this one with all its new upgrades--"

"There's always the elevator."

"I'll hear it coming. That's just giving me a head start."

She pulled back from the display, tapping her fingers against the orange screen with obvious impatience. He couldn't see her, but she hoped he could hear the clicking over the comm and found it at least mildly irritating. Take that. "Is there something you want ( ... )

What Rose needed to understand was that she was not invincible. No one was.

Even a woman like her, built so tough and cemented over with miles of armor, could break. And that type made an especially nice cracking sound when they shattered ( ... )
