I loved it. I read it the summer before my first year and it got me pumped and excited. I do agree about the egotistical tendencies, though.

I also thought he was rather egotistical.

Also, as a first year teacher it is impossible to to ALL that in your first year. Get strategic..build slowly. In a few years you can do more.

Also, without the support of the principal or admins help, getting a longer "day" can be difficult. Our students that stay late, stay for intervention (more reading and math). We have the curriculum for science and social science..what we don't have is the time.

I don't think he's suggesting that anyone should walk in the door and be able to accomplish all that he has in a 20+ year career during their first year. Did you interpret it that way? When I read reader reviews on Amazon.com, it seemed like a lot of people took it personally after reading the book- like they were not good teachers if they did't have a classroom like Esquith. I didn't read it like that. Although it has an "I'm pretty fantastic" kind of theme, every situation is different. No doubt he's had a lot of failures. They're just not in the book.

I think that in his case, he not only has admin and district backing, but I think his class is also probably the higher level performers who are super motivated.
