Always the Hero
by robinfanatic
The gang hurried along the Old North Road. Little John and Much walked twenty or so paces behind the others bringing up the rear guard, watchful for any signs of Isabella's troops.
Much was awfully quiet, which worried John. He cast an eye toward the younger outlaw and finally broke the silence. "Much, I'm sorry."
"Sorry?" Much frowned. "For what?"
"I shouldn't have yelled at you yesterday."
"No, you were right, John. I messed up." Much kicked at a rock in the road, then scanned the forest around them. "If I'd been paying attention, that guard wouldn't have jumped me. We'd already have Thornton's haul. Instead we're headed to Nottingham to try to sneak it out of the castle."
"That's true," John agreed. He'd offer no sympathy and could tell from the regret in Much's voice that his friend expected none. "Almost got us all killed at Knight's Glade."
Much's face reddened. "Oi!" he protested. "I rescued you!"
"But we wouldn't have been there--"
"If I'd done my job earlier." Much sighed. "You're right."
"I still didn't have to yell at you," John admitted. "It's not like I haven't had my own mind wander a time or two and done something stupid."
"Yeah," Much snickered, "like bringing the Sheriff to the camp."
John wasn't about to argue over that one. "On the other hand..." he added with a sense of satisfaction, "Robin knows for certain now that Isabella is our enemy. And that's a good thing."
"I hadn't thought about it like that." Much stopped in the middle of road, a small grin washing across his face. "So in a way I'm the hero, right?"
John turned around. "You're always a hero, Much," he said, planting one hand gently on the outlaw's shoulder. There was a hint of a tear in Much's eyes. His lower lip quivered. John grabbed him in a big bear hug. They held each other for a few seconds, then turned to follow the others. This time that treasure was theirs!
