"Art" is trying to let other see the beauty we have seen (if only in our dreams).
It has intrinsic value, in addition to what laluna was saying, I think - art conveys truth and beauty concisely, and can thus be beautiful in itself, as well as representing what the artist was originally intending.
i don't think it is possible to answer this question. art asks, suggests, provokes, answers, hides, reveals, decorates, functions, helps, hinders, angers, delights, inspires, disgusts, stands out, blends in...it doesn't have to be "beautiful" because "beautiful" is subjective- god created spiders, and i think spiders are hideous, but the way he created them is still amazing. the world now hails monet as one of the masters of art, but i don't really care about his paintings (heh, no offense, monsieur monet), but i love looking at wallpaper or textile designs, even though that may not be considered "art". or, if art must be beautiful, the "beauty" could lie in the meaning of the work, or in the act of creating the work, or in its conscious rejection of what society defines as "beautiful
