Nathan tossed and turned in bed one night not long after Haley had told him she was pregnant. He couldn't get his mind off of everything that was going on. He finally fell into an uneasy sleep, his dreams overtaking his mind.
"Haley, I'm home!" Nathan called, walking into the apartment with a suit on and a briefcase in hand. He ran a hand through his hair as he put the briefcase down on the sofa and continued onto the kitchen. He took a bottle of beer out of the refrigerator and opened it, taking a slug of it.
There was no noise coming from Haley as she heard Nathan's call from the kitchen. She was tending to their 10 month old baby boy, Michael Keith, in their small one room herself, Nathan and the baby shared. Michael was slowly falling asleep after crying continuously for about an hour. She sighed, finally being able to put him down in his small oak framed crib.
"Haley?" Nathan called again as he put his bottle of beer down on the counter, walking towards their bedroom.
Haley's head turned towards the bedroom door and quickly covered Michael up. Meeting him in the hall she hushed him. "Shh, Nathan I just got him to sleep. He's been up for hours crying. Please, keep your voice down" She spoke in a ravished way. She sighed again putting her hands on her hips, looking tired.
"Look, I've had a hard day at work, working for Danof all people and you're telling me to be quiet? Geez, Haley, you're getting as bad as Dan, not to mention Deb every time she's high off her pills," Nathan said, shaking his head in disgust as he thought about his parents.
Her eyes turned to small slits as she glared at him. "What that hell is that supposed to mean, Nathan and how dare you compare me to our parents. It's not my fault you chose to work for your father." She hissed back trying to keep her voice down.
"I chose to work with Dan? No, I think you forced me to the minute you told me you were pregnant when we both know that without a college education, this is the best paying job there is for me to get! And the only other choice I had was to move back in with my parents and annull our marriage. Why did you have to get pregnant anyway?" he spat.
"I didn't force you to do anything, Nathan Scott!" She said his name fiercely, which only happened when she was really started to get infuriated. "W-why did I gave to get pregnant? I didn't HAVE to get pregnant, Nathan. You were the start of that ordeal. It's just as good your fault as mind and I can't believe you're putting the blame all on me! And to think, I told you you would never be your father, but since you started working for him, you are the splitting image" Her face was red with anger now, her voice was getting louder, hence she forgot about the sleeping child in the next room.
Their son woke up and started crying again. Nathan slammed his fist against the wall. "Damnit, Haley!" He went into their room and picked up Michael, trying to quiet him.
She jumped a little when he slammed his hand into the wall but shook the feeling away stomping after him into the bed room. She saw Nathan with Michael in his hands and suddenly felt that Michael wasn't safe around him in his stage of anger. Haley went over to Nathan and took Michael out of his hands and walked to the other side of the room. "It's okay, Michael, shhh mommy's here" She talked to him trying to calm him, her back towards Nathan.
Nathan swore under his breath. Just great, first she was telling him what to do and now she was keeping him from his own son. He left their bedroom and went out to the kitchen. He took another slug of beer, leaning against the counter, inwardly fuming.
After Nathan had left, Haley looked over her shoulder to find him gone. She shook her head. "Unbelievable" She said to herself with disgust. Michael was now cooing and she rubbed his head gently. "I love you, baby. Right now it seems like you're all I have.." She sighed and set him down in the crib where he was sitting up and holding a toy. She turned and krept out of the room, down the hallway and into the living-room/ kitchen seeing Nathan drinking again. She stopped, looked at him. "Drinking again I see" She said then turned away towards the couch.
"Well it's about all I can do since I sold all our gaming systems to Tim for some extra money and you won't let me hold on my own son," he told her.
She turned back towards him, her anger starting to resurface. "No, not while you're like this and not while alcohol is on your system" She said harshly towards him.
Nathan scoffed, "Oh, yeah, uh huh. What about last night then, huh, Haley? I wasn't drinking then!"
"I let you hold him, Nathan! But you should know that after giving birth to a child, a mother is protective of her child and doesn't like others holding him!" Her eyes raged with violent anger.
Nathan rolled his eyes and muttered, "You've let Dan hold him more than me."
"What was that?" She asked harshly not hearing him fully.
"I said that you let Dan, you know, my abusive, manipulative father, hold our son more than you let me."
"Because for once I trust him!" She blurted out. "And abusive? Heh, now I know where his son gets it from" She said after getting into his face a bit about to turn to walk away.
"You trust Dan? You trust the man who has tried to break us up on more than one occasion and walked out on Karen, whom you seem to be all buddy buddy with lately?" Nathan asked, disbelieving, grabbing Haley's arm as she went to walk away.
She whipped back at him as he pulled her. His strength becoming over powering. She glared at him in the eye. "Yes, I do. He's been a better grandfather than you a father since Michael's been born!" She tugged trying to remove her arm from his strong grasp. "Let go of me" She said sternly.
"No, I'm not going to let go because he is not a better grandfather, you just never give me a chance! You've had this image of me since day one of not being fit to be a father that that's what I've become, Haley!"
"I said let go!" She pushed him and hit his arm to make him let go. " You are not a fit father, Nathan! You come home late every night, you never once tucked him into bed, you never rocked him to sleep, you always have been drinking. You haven't done anything for him since he was born except buy him toys. You can't buy love, Nathan. You of all people should know that!" She tugged again to get away.
"I've almost never had time to do those things because I'm always out trying to make money so I can support the two of you while you stay at home with him! And when I do tuck him in or watch him sleep, you're all ready asleep so you don't even see it. You only see what you want to see, Haley, and that's that I'm an unfit father!" he shouted, still not letting go of her arm.
His gripped tighten on her arm causing her to wince. "Nathan, you're hurting me Let go!" She yelled hitting his chest. "That's a lie! I am always up waiting for you to get home when you say you're gonna be home and I've already put him to sleep. You think you can lie out of this? No you can't..." She winced a little more. "Ow! Let go!"
"I'm not lying, Haley!" he yelled, finally letting go of her. "How many times have you fallen asleep on the couch and I've had to carry you to bed? Too damn many for me to count, and every time you mumble something and I tell you to go back to sleep right before I check on our son!"
With his force when he let go, She flew backwards, landing on the ground with a hard thud staying there for a moment.
"I can't take this right now," Nathan muttered, grabbing the keys to his car and going outside, slamming the door shut.
Watching him go, she got up and opened the door as he pulled away. She was slightly in tears now and knew what she had to do. "I can't take this anymore.." She said at the door and turned back towards their bed room. Searching under the bed, she found her suitcase and started filling it with her things. Soon after, she grabbed Michael's clothes, bottles and the rest of his stuff and packed it in his baby bag. Finally, she went over to Michael's crib and picked him up. "Come on, Michael. We're going away for a while" She said and took hers and his bag. Walking to the front door, she didn't even bother leaving a note, but on the bar was her wedding band, sitting without it's owner. She opened the door and took one last look then left.
Half an hour later, Nathan returned home, and called for Haley. He went around the apartment but she and Michael were nowhere to be seen. He went back to the kitchen to look for a note about where she went when he noticed her wedding bad. He swore under his breath, went back out to the car and started dialing her cell phone. "Pick up the phone, Haley," he muttered as he got into his car and shut the door.
As she drove past a sign saying 'Leaving Tree Hill', she noticed her phone lighting up on the seat next to her. She looked over and picked it up, looking at Nathan's name light up on the screen. She swallowed and pressed missed call and threw it back on the seat as she continued to drive. Michael was sleeping in the back seat, soundly.
Nathan started the car, not bothering to buckle his seatbelt. He slammed his foot on the gas, calling Haley's phone again, praying she would pick it up as he drove towards the bridge.
Her phone stopped ringing for a moment but was starting to again. She tried to ignore it, she even yelled at it to shutup but as she drove, she started to give in, looking at it now and then.
"Pick up the phone, Haley!" he yelled even though he knew she couldn't hear him. "Damnit, don't do this to me, not again." He didn't take his eyes from the phone, and as his palm grew sweaty, he could feel the car starting to swerve.
Her tears starting to form and settle in her eyes as she pulled the car over and looked at her phone again before picking up. Finally after a few moments passing, she gave in and picked it up. "You're not going to stop are you?" She tried to hide her emotion and tears as she spoke.
"I can't, Haley, I hate what's happened between us," he told her. "Please, come back home, to me, we can start over, be a family, I'll quit my job at Dan Scott's Motors and I'll find something else. I need you, Hales. I lo-" But he didn't get to finish, blinded by his tears he didn't notice that he'd turned the wheel too far to the right and was going too fast to brake before he started to go over the bridge.
"Nathan?" She called into the phone as she heard crashing in the backround. Her heart was pounding as fear raced through her. "Nathan?!" She called again as her tears starting falling from her eyes. "Nathan!!" Her hand was shaking now as she kept calling into the phone.
The car crashed into the water and Nathan dropped the phone by accident. He tried to open the door but it was jammed. He tried the windows, but that just made the water start to pour in. "Haley?!" he called desperately, still trying to get out in vain.
Hearing no sign of her husband on the other line, she still kept screaming for him until finally the line got disconnected as the water flooded his phone. "Oh..god.." She barely could speak as she was shaking and in tears. The phone still in her hand. Michael had woken up but was completely content and cooing in the carseat. She knew something happend, something horrible and that feeling wasn't going to go away this time.
Nathan started to lose consciousness, his mouth still open in a yell. He saw a flash of light and then he was in the suit he had worn to their second wedding. Haley swam before his eyes and he reached, trying to grab ahold of her.
Nathan woke up calling Haley's name a few seconds later. His heart was pounding and there were tears streaming down his cheeks mingled with sweat.
