Just Shit On Me

So today I had a frightening experience that sorta started to shake my philosophies on the concept of life.  Long story short, I had just fed Drizzit his medicine (staph infection in his front right poodle leg), and as a tasty reward, gave him some canned dog food called "Hunk of Beef."  It's literally a hunk of beef that been stewed in its own ( Read more... )

if there is no distinction between what we label as "human" and "animal" than no, we shouldn't stop hunting and eating. if we consider ourselves part of the animal world, and look at our brother animals, they hunt and kill as well. even the little swallow hunts and eats flies and bugs. perhaps our mode of hunting is cruel, but if you watch people, they think how a spider hunts is cruel too; she bites her prey, wraps it up, and leaves it there for the insides to slowly digest before she eats it, while its still alive. So in truth, we are animals, we eat animals, and we can be eaten by other animals. We all feel fear, and live simply to stay alive.

I agree with Rory. You can't slice it both ways. If you want to say we're all living creatures, then you have to acknowledge that human beings are omnivores. There is nothing particularly cruel about the way we maintain and harvest the carnivorous portion of out diet (in fact, it's quite merciful compared to some). We're also not the only omnivore that has a choice about what we eat. Bears, for example, are capable of subsisting only on plants. However, given access to meat, bears will choose to be omnivores. They recognize that their quality of life it better if they utilize the full spectrum of resources available to them. Granted, the production of meat has a negative effect on the environment, but it's easy to argue that agriculture is just as bad, if not worse. True, we could grow all organic vegetables to eliminate harmful insecticides and fertilizers, but the resulting lower yield would necessitate more farmland, thus destroying more natural habitat. We can live without meat, it's true, but whether or not we should is pretty ( ... )
