Chapter 20: Somebody Loved
Caleb smiled as he watched the other young man settled against his side. Pressing a kiss into Dallas’ hair, Caleb tightened his arm around his lover. He knew tomorrow morning, he’d take Dallas back to the Dollhouse and all memories of the two of them together would be wiped; permanently this time as Dallas’ contract was up in two days.
Dallas reacted to the strengthening of the hold by looking up at Caleb with a smile like sin. “Feeling possessive tonight?”
“Just remembering how lucky I was the day I found you,” Caleb replied sincerely, unable to resist leaning in and kissing the gorgeous young man in his embrace.
“I want you to remember that next time I’m miserable with a cold,” Dallas smiled blindingly and patted Caleb’s thigh before standing. “I’m grabbing a beer. Want one, baby?”
Caleb shook his head. “No I’m good.” As he watched the man he was going to have to surrender tomorrow, Caleb made a decision. Actually, he’d made the decision about four years when he decided to keep engaging the Doll known as Dallas. “This I promise to you, Dallas: No matter what it takes, I will find you again, I will love you for who you really are, and I will never give you back.” Caleb let his vow trail into a whisper as Dallas came back into the room.
“Did you say something, Caleb?”
Messing with the volume on the television, Caleb said, “Just wondering if you were having trouble finding the beers.”
Dallas rolled his beautiful green eyes. “Have I ever had trouble finding the alcohol? Your freakin’ candy stashes everywhere, those are hard to find. The alcohol resides on the top shelf inside our fridge door. Dork,” he added with an affectionate smile.
Caleb shut off the TV.
“Dude, the Cowboys were about to cream the Bucs,” Dallas protested.
“I need to talk to you,” Caleb took a deep breath. He had to phrase this properly or it would get erased with the rest of the mind wipe tomorrow. “I want you to listen to me very closely.”
Dallas raised an eyebrow. “Gee, Caleb, be more exploding tape would you?”
Caleb smiled. Ready wit, that was the thing that had excited him most to learn that Doll Dallas shared with… whatever Dallas’ real name was in the real world. Something Caleb was going to find out as soon as possible. “I think you’re gorgeous.”
“You have to otherwise I won’t put out,” Dallas replied.
“You are,” Caleb stressed.
Dallas blushed. “I’m all right.”
“You don’t think you’re good-looking? You’re kidding, right?”
Dallas smiled, “No, but that look of disbelief makes my ego do the happy dance.”
Caleb shook his head; he was getting distracted. “I think you are beautiful inside and out. You are everything I was looking for, and frankly at lot more than I ever hoped.”
Dallas raised a hand to Caleb’s cheek with a loving look.
Holding the hand against his face, Caleb continued, “I want you to know that I love you. I love you for who you are, who you really are. I will come for you, always. And where you lead, I will follow.” He closed his eyes. If his sources were correct, a unique phrase would have the most chance of avoiding the wipe as it wouldn’t have been directly connected to the… designation that Caleb had given the Active. “If we were dogs, you would be Rin Tin Tin and I would be Pluto.”
Dallas got a look of complete confusion on his face and, rather than explain himself, Caleb kissed the adorable frown off Dallas’ lips. “I’ll explain another day, now,” he took the hand still on his cheek and used it to pull an unresisting Dallas into the bedroom, “I want you to make love to me like we have all the time in the world.”
“Good plan,” Dallas grinned, closing the bedroom door behind them.
