Wow, that soil looks just like what I left behind in NJ. Dark crumbly and rich.

I wish my front bed looked like that.

Why is it that the gardens they use for their photos are so prissy perfect?
The soil is perfect, the plants are perfect, and there's nary a weed to be seen.
Grumble...
A very good article though. I like the lists of perennials they have at the end of it. They let you know what you'll be in for a few years after you bring home that cute little plant.
I tried to dig up an old peony once and finally gave up as I neared the one foot marker and after an hour of digging. How my grandmother put that peony out in that nearly solid rock hilltop of hers, I will never know. What really got my goat that day was that I could easily see that I was nowhere near the ends of the peony roots! I came home with several 2-3 inch long pieces of roots, put them out, and they lived! It was nearly 4 years before I saw the first bloom on them, but bloom they did.

I love peonies. That's on my wish list for one of these days. Do you still have some?

Yes, I do. I keep buying them whenever I catch them on sale. They are as tough as old boots and very hard to kill.

I saw a segment on a gardening show that was fascinating. Been wanting to try one ever since but can't have one here I don't think. Too many flowers for SIL the flower hater.
