For me, writing long-fics is hit or miss. Sometimes I can do it in a short period, and sometimes they languish as WIPs for a while and have to percolate through my hindbrain before I can get them out. I had so much of the story in my head, I thought this was going to be one of the easy ones, but it turned out not to be.
I kind of do agree somewhat to the above statement that Avengers (and probably Sherlock to a lesser extent) has probably shifted the focus of part of the fandom (I admit I'm a victim to this as well). But then again over 50 people signed up for STBB, so I'm not sure if other distractions were the problem.
For me it was mostly RL and the delays made it harder to figure out time to write in between, but I shouldn't have procrastinated either. I don't know, maybe have a mandatory check-in to gauge people's progress halfway or something next year? That might help?
I do think the delays hurt the challenge. I think a lot of people just forgot about the challenge or moved on to something else. I don't think it's a case of the Star Trek fandom not being able to sustain a reverse bang, it's had a very successful big bang for years now. I also think how soon artists sign ups close could have discouraged artists that find the challenge later on. I was brought in to help mod at a reverse bang and one of the things the mod decided to do there was keep artists sign up open until a few days before the deadline, and it worked so well I've followed the example in the other reverse bangs I run

Thank you for the feedback. I'll definitely be using it to determine the changes needed to make this challenge much better run and enjoyable in future rounds.
One thing I would say -- a in-place pinch hit system from the beginning might be some help. When it "fell apart" as it were, there wasn't really anything in place to pin it back together. A bit of time for an extra sign up for pinch hitters at the beginning and then implementing it as authors failed to submit could make people feel less like the challenge was dispersing into the ether.
It may feel more like that for me though, since I started out with 6 authors and ended up with 2 posted, 4 gone MIA. :)

The mandatory check-ins seem like a necessary change especially with how authorial contact tapered off at the end.
