Dune

So I've owned this book for a long time, but the first time I picked it up, I didn't get past the fourth page. Last Friday night, I tried again, and suddenly I was hooked.

I only find time to read printed books on Shabbat, so I'm only two-thirds of the way done, but I think I love this book.

The problem with this book is that characters I love keep dying. It's sort of like Lost in that I don't know if there's going to be anyone left by the time it's done. I liked the duke, but it was hopeless to root for him from the beginning. I really liked Kynes, and I wanted to learn more about him, and it stinks that he died. At least his death scene was incredible. I kept thinking that scene would be amazing in a movie.

I liked Duncan Idaho, too, even though I kept picturing him as Duncan from Veronica Mars, which cracks me up. But I sort of have a hunch he's not really dead...Lady Fenring or whatever she's called said not to assume anyone's dead unless we see his/her dead body, and we haven't seen his. I'm just guessing that it's a clue, don't spoil me either way please.

Also, I have no idea what's going on in Thufir Hawat's head, but then again I haven't seen him since before he was captured. But I liked him in his first scene with Paul, so I hope he's a good guy...even though he's probably doomed to die, also. It pisses me off that Yueh's plan didn't work, and that the duke had to die but the baron didn't. I know, there would be no plot otherwise, but it's not fair.

In conclusion, for anyone who likes science fiction and hasn't read Dune, I highly recommend, so far.
