So the other day I realized I was in the mood to read romance: full out, melodramatic, happy-ending romance. I wasn't looking for smut, I wasn't looking for originality; I just wanted a good old fashioned "two humans meet, they have a few encounters and/or adventures, they figure out they like each other, fall in love, kiss, live happily ever ( Read more... )

Loretta Chase's Lord of Scoundrels and the Last Hellion are both excellent. They're historical het romance and shouldn't be too hard to find; beautiful language.

I like some of Amanda Quick's earlier stuff, but she's best in small doses, I think. Deception, Mistress, Mystique were all good.

For a darker, futuristic romance, I adore J D Robb's first mystery, Naked In Death. A cop and a thief fall in love. Has one of the strongest and most interesting female characters ever, IMO, and an awesome hero.

I have had a few rec's for original slash, but I haven't read them yet. If they're good, I'll let you know. I used to read a lot of non-het romance but I don't remember the names of many of them.

Thank you! I didn't see Loretta Chase at the bookstore, but J D Robb was there and I'm looking forward to a good read. :)

I would second the JD Robb recommendation. I love the entire Eve Dallas series. If you like a little espionage with your romance(and you like something a little older), either Mary Stewart (The Moonspinners - Very different from the Disney movie) or Helen MacInnes would work. They were usually decently written, with plots that kept you guessing, and the damsel in distress wasn't always too helpless.

It's always nice when the damsel isn't too helpless. XD Thank you for the recs!

I love Jamaica Inn, by the slightly infamous Daphne Du Maurier. And Maurice by E.M. Forster hits all kinds of delightful slasher buttons.
