I just got my yuletide assignment and seven kinds of hyper about it. For the first time, there are two prompts I could actually tackle. Two! The sheer choice of it all is mind boggling.

And possibly daunting.

There were not many catalogs made so young. Neural network overload and cyber instability were words the authorities of the day murmured constantly in their defense of the age requirements. Some of the media liked to preach that the creation of catalogs under the age of seventeen would herald the end of civilization, but then fear always made for good ratings. Nijel found the articles kind of funny, considering he'd only been twelve when they'd wired him.

Not to say that he'd enjoyed being wired. Being stuck in bed for a month of recovery hadn't been fun, and then physical therapy made that look like a day at the carnival. Learning how to walk, talk, eat... it was like being a baby again, only more painful because he'd remember it forever. The perfunctory ministrations of the nurses with their cold hands and bored eyes still gave him nightmares ( ... )

As far as Nijel could tell, Snow was never on for long. Whatever data he handled was probably sensitive as hell, or else he just didn't have time for the network. His avatar would blink on for a minute or two, never more than fifteen, and then he'd disappear again. In the Temple district they called him a ghost, and there were all sorts of urban legends about how to summon him or what would happen if you did, but the only 'real' data anyone seemed to have was that if you were in a pinch and left a prayer on the Temple board, the most helpful reply you got would be signed 'Librarian Snow ( ... )
