I suppose my main problem is that DW is not a good service. I have serious trouble posting things there and it limits my ability to follow other communities. I really can't figure it out, because it's a service that was built for fandom. So why is it so difficult to post my fanworks on it

I've been thinking of moving my three active comms over, but keeping a foot on LJ with them and allowing comments on both sites - but not right now, and only if I can work it out so I don't end up with more work. To be honest, I'm not too worried right now. Most of this is more a 'just in case' thing.
I also wish there was a platform that could draw all fans together. Tumblr and me just don't work well at the moment, and Twitter is also a place I don't really hang out anymore.

Other vidders use the site. I don't know what is causing you difficulty. You are not alone in hating YouTube.
I think it is a good idea to backup your content somewhere. If LJ goes down permanently, I wouldn't count on there being any warning.

My blog is archived on my computer. I don't know if that's good enough to import elsewhere, but it's not that important for me.

I use simple html rather than the text editor at DW (and LJ and AO3 and Tumblr). I struggled mightily with the text editor. I never did master it. Eventually I found a kid's html learning site and taught myself to use it instead.

Lots of vidders use Vimeo, but the trouble with that is that it's as not very publicly accessible. If I want my vid to get around as much as possible, I have to post it on YouTube, despite the reality and danger that they'll take it down or block it.

Also, I can't find the Friends feed. Which was the main way I kept track on other people and really everything except for some fests like BB or RBB. EDIT: okay, there is some sort of "Read" option, but that can't be right, because it only shows one entry (and also, they say that feed only goes back two weeks)? ...Actually it looks like that is right, except I need to "Subscribe" to people's journals. Instead of a simple Friend option, there is a difference between granting/having access and subscribing... I don't think LJ had this differentiating, except for communities; and, okay, it probably has some advantages but right now I don't have the time to really go and learn all DW's differences ( ... )

I like DW -- to me, it's a lot like LJ. (But I use the html editor, and do most of my posting from Semagic anyway, which was something I started when LJ kept changing its posting interface a few years back.)
