Looking, Seeing

Last night, I watched half of Hou Hsiao-Hsien's Three Times, which confirmed that he is absolutely one of my favorite filmmakers. Like a lot of my favorite filmmakers (Abbas Kiarostami, Tsai Ming-Liang, Amos Gitai, etc.), Hou's style involves long, static takes, the subversion of "drama," and a demand that the audience train themselves to see ( Read more... )

I really enjoyed writing it. I had a high afterwards, and now I think I get why Mario is always "hyper" when he updates. As a side note, I wrote (most of) this in my head while falling asleep last night. If I could remember and write down most of what I write in my head while falling asleep, I would probably have twice as many entries in my journal.

I never noticed that about No Country for Old Men. Looking back, though, I definitely see what you mean. I really liked that movie. Haven't seen Harold and Maude, but I think that, from what I know about it, it's one of those movies where music "speaks" for the director/screenwriter. That kind of use of music is, to me, sort of lazy and unappealing. The thing about Hou is that he could use any type of music without necessarily letting it bleed into the film itself. That kind of control is rare in a director.

From the half of it that I've seen, I think it's recommendable. Actually, the only one of is I've seen that I wasn't totally sold on is Flowers of Shanghai, but it was a long time ago, and the first of his that I've seen, so I think I probably just didn't "get it" at that time.
