THURSDAY
I was sitting not more than 50 feet away from the Postsecret event on Thursday, but I was in my psych class, on the other side of the wall where secrets were being projected. I managed to catch the tail end of the book signing, but I'm still disappointed I missed the presentation. I could hear strains of Camera Obscura's "Tears For Affairs" during the lecture, and it made me sad.
However, before class, I went to a new record store called Hits and Misses. It specializes in mostly punk, hardcore and "crust" (yeah, I'm not sure either), but I picked up a Xiu Xiu/Dead Science split 7" and "Idea" by the Bee Gees on CD.
FRIDAY
During the day Matthew and David and I worked on the Lego movie. I seem to get easily distracted when I play with Lego. I ended up making a Lego man without legs, who happened to be a policeman, rescuing another Lego man, caught on the camera cord, with a vine. But after the shoot David and I went down by the water to see the lights. These 20 spotlights pulsated and moved around depending on your heartbeat and its intensity. There were 10 stations that you held onto with both hands controlling the spotlights and 10 that were reacting to the first 10. So cool! David managed to hit the CN Tower with his heart. Mine wasn't as accurate.
We decided to walk along the lake because it was a nice night.
SATURDAY
In the morning, we were walking along Queen E. because Couple Magazine had an open house, but we stumbled upon a little art sale under some white tents in a small park. I had just bought The Mothers of Invention's "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" and I received my second comment about it there. The first was from a 60ish-year-old-man with a crazy beard/mustache going on in a convenience store. He told me he remembered Zappa when he was just getting started. "'66, I think it was" he told me. And his first album was indeed released that year! David paid for his banana popsicle and we were on our way. It was a photographer's friend under one of the white tents who also noticed the record through my bag. She told me she knew someone who looked like Zappa, and that it was difficult to take him seriously. But then again Zappa never drank or did drugs and was perhaps one of the smartest musicians ever. Anyway we later ended up downtown and looked at the inflatable sculptures.
And after David left I decided to go see if Sam's had a inventory clearance sale going yet. But they didn't so I walked to Yonge-Dundas Square where I saw old dancing men, crazy drummers, a human scupture, and children running through the water fountains. (One of these got me photo of the day in
Torontoist!)
Oh, and then I caught a bit of the opening ceremonies of the museum opening. It took me half an hour to walk a quarter of a block, there were so many people, but it was nice to know that Toronto was alive and well. And the new crystal looks amazing when its lit with blue lights.
SUNDAY
I decided to go back to the East end and go to some places in the city I'd never been before. My day was mostly spent at the Riverdale Farm, amongst the families and tourists who were all well-prepared for rain, but hoping it would stay away. I spent a lot of time with the sheep and ducks as well as the goats. The horses were nice to me too although most of the animals looked tired. Saturday must have been busy for them.
Just across the street is Necropolis, Toronto's oldest cemetery, so I took pictures of the beautifully worn epitaphs until it started to rain. But really, it should always be raining in cemeteries.
I eventually made it to my restaurant for a late dinner. Tamarind chicken and a mango shake never tasted so good!
Today I hung around the house and started panning out my website. Tomorrow is school, and I'm going to visit a cupcake store.
