Ishida felt moisture on his cheek. Was it raining? Where was he? The last thing he remembered was being attacked, and then...Inoue!
Ishida tried to force himself into a sitting position, but for some reason, he couldn't move. He momentarily panicked. Why wouldn't his body listen to him? "Inoue..." he rasped.
As if on cue, everything around him began making sense. He heard Inoue screeching. "Why isn't it working?!"
Her hands were clenched in her lap, tugging at her skirt. She looked as though she were trying to keep herself from sobbing. "Inoue..." Ishida said again, his brow furrowing.
Orihime made a noise, as if she'd just noticed that he was awake. "Ishida-kun! How do you feel?"
He contemplated telling her the truth--that his body was aching from the overuse of his powers, not to mention the multiple wounds he was sustaining--but one look at Inoue's tear-stained face, and he couldn't bring himself to do it. She seemed worried sick already, and he didn't want to contribute to her pain.
So he lied.
"I think I'm alright," he said, trying to put as much strength behind his voice as possible. She seemed slightly placated, despite her air of sadness, but she was more worried than Ishida had ever seen her.
"I can't..." she began, but broke off when a sob robbed her of her voice.
Ishida tilted his head, looking at her curiously; even the minimal head movement made him wince a little.
"I can't heal you!" she exclaimed finally, closing her eyes to avoid making eye contact. Ishida frowned, a blush coloring his cheeks as a few more of her teardrops fell onto his face.
"Don't cry, Inoue. I'm sure that...Kurosaki needs you more than I..."
Orihime opened her eyes, still looking pained, but eyes shining with gratitude. "Thank you, Ishida-kun," she said, smiling softly.
Such a warmth flooded his body at the gesture; he wondered if he was beginning to heal already.
